Trachinotus falcatus, commonly known as the Permit, is a highly sought-after game fish belonging to the family Carangidae (jacks and pompanos). It is renowned for its challenging fight and elusive nature, particularly in shallow water environments. This species exhibits a deep, compressed body, silvery coloration, and distinctive elongated dorsal and anal fins in adults. Juveniles often display vertical bars that fade with age. Body Shape and Coloration
Look for a deep, compressed, silvery body. Juveniles may have faint vertical bars. The overall profile is very tall relative to its length.
Fin Morphology
The most distinguishing feature in adults is the extremely long, sickle-shaped anterior rays of the second dorsal and anal fins. These fins can be nearly as long as the body depth.
Mouth Position
Permit have a small, inferior mouth, adapted for bottom feeding on crustaceans and mollusks.
Absence of Scutes
Unlike many other members of the Carangidae family, Permit lack prominent scutes (bony plates) along the lateral line near the tail.

Ghost of the Flatsbehavior
Permit are notoriously wary and difficult to approach, earning them the nickname 'ghost of the flats' among fly anglers. Their keen eyesight and sensitivity to vibrations make them a challenging target.
Crab Connoisseursbehavior
Their primary diet consists of crabs, especially small blue crabs and fiddler crabs, which they expertly root out of sandy and grassy bottoms using their inferior mouth.
Long-Lived Fightersrecord
Permit can live for over 20 years and grow to impressive sizes, with the current IGFA all-tackle world record standing at 60 pounds (27.2 kg).

Vergelijkbare soorten
Florida Pompano
Trachinotus carolinus
The Florida Pompano has much shorter dorsal and anal fins that are not nearly as elongated or sickle-shaped as those of the Permit. It also typically has a more yellowish coloration on its belly and fins, and usually 22-27 soft rays in the anal fin compared to 18-20 for the Permit.
African Pompano
Alectis ciliaris
While also having elongated fin rays as juveniles, the African Pompano (and other Alectis species) has a more diamond-shaped body, and the elongated rays are typically much longer and filamentous, especially in juveniles. Adults lose these extremely long filaments, but their body shape remains distinct. African Pompano also have a more pronounced forehead.
Palometa
Trachinotus goodei
The Palometa is a smaller species with several distinct dark vertical bars on its sides that persist into adulthood. Its dorsal and anal fins are also elongated but not to the extreme extent seen in adult Permit, and the body is generally less deep.
