Benthic, preferring rocky or gravelly bottoms, submerged logs, and areas with abundant cover. They are intolerant of warm water and low oxygen levels.

Geographic range

Circumpolar distribution in the Northern Hemisphere. Found across North America (Canada, Alaska, northern US states), Europe (Scandinavia, Russia, Central Europe), and Asia (Siberia). Its range extends south to about 40°N latitude in North America and Europe.
