Ambiente

Prefers sandy or muddy bottoms, seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica, Cymodocea nodosa), and estuaries. Often found near river mouths and in areas with mixed sand and rock. Juveniles are common in very shallow, protected sandy areas.

Areale geografico

Widespread in the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, and the Eastern Atlantic Ocean from the Bay of Biscay south to South Africa, including the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and Madeira. Also found in the Red Sea and Indo-Pacific via the Suez Canal (Lessepsian migration).
