Descrizione

Lithognathus mormyrus, commonly known as the Mormora or Striped Seabream, is a demersal marine fish belonging to the family Sparidae. It is a highly esteemed food fish and a popular target for recreational anglers due to its palatable flesh and widespread distribution. This species is characterized by its distinctive vertical stripes and elongated body, adapted for life in sandy and muddy bottoms where it actively forages for benthic invertebrates.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Body Shape

Look for an elongated, somewhat compressed body, typical of a bottom-feeding seabream.

Coloration and Stripes

The most distinguishing feature is the presence of 10-15 dark, narrow, vertical bands on a silvery-grey background. These stripes are usually very clear and extend from the back down to the belly.

Mouth

Observe the small, slightly inferior, and protractile mouth, adapted for sifting through sand for prey.

Teeth

While not always visible without close inspection, the presence of conical teeth anteriorly and molariform teeth posteriorly is characteristic of the species and its diet.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
saltwater
Profondità
Typically found in shallow coastal waters from 0.5 to 80 meters, occasionally deeper (up to 150 meters).
Ambiente
Prefers sandy or muddy bottoms, seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica, Cymodocea nodosa), and estuaries. Often found near river mouths and in areas with mixed sand and rock. Juveniles are common in very shallow, protected sandy areas.
Areale geografico
Widespread in the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, and the Eastern Atlantic Ocean from the Bay of Biscay south to South Africa, including the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and Madeira. Also found in the Red Sea and Indo-Pacific via the Suez Canal (Lessepsian migration).

  • Compatibilità: Best kept in species-specific tanks or with other large, robust, and non-aggressive marine fish. Avoid keeping with smaller fish or invertebrates as they may be preyed upon.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires a large tank with ample swimming space and a soft sand substrate for burrowing. Excellent filtration and stable water parameters are crucial. Can be sensitive to poor water quality. Not typically recommended for home aquaria due to size and specific needs.

Informazioni in natura

  • Stato di conservazione: least concern
  • Stagionalità: Spawning typically occurs in late spring to early summer, with peak catches often observed during these periods and into autumn.
  • Prezzo di mercato: Varies significantly by region and size, generally considered a high-value food fish.
  • Importanza commerciale: high
  • Sapore: Mild, delicate, and slightly sweet flavor.

Fatti chiave

Sand Sifterbehavior

The Mormora's protractile mouth and specialized teeth are perfectly adapted for sifting through sand and mud to extract small invertebrates, making it a highly efficient benthic feeder.

Hermaphroditismbehavior

Lithognathus mormyrus is a protandrous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals mature first as males and later transition to females. This reproductive strategy is common among many sparid species.

Lessepsian Migrantevolution

This species has successfully colonized the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond into the Indo-Pacific via the Suez Canal, demonstrating its adaptability to new environments.

Schooling Behaviorbehavior

Mormora often form schools, especially juveniles, which provides protection from predators and aids in foraging efficiency over sandy flats.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: No specific handling precautions are required beyond standard fish handling practices to avoid fin pricks. The dorsal and anal fin spines are sharp but not venomous.

Specie simili

Common Two-banded Seabream

Diplodus vulgaris

Diplodus vulgaris has two prominent black vertical bands (one behind the head, one on the caudal peduncle) and lacks the numerous thin vertical stripes of Lithognathus mormyrus. Its body is also typically deeper and more compressed.

White Seabream

Diplodus sargus

Diplodus sargus has a silvery body with 8-9 less distinct vertical bands that often fade with age, and a prominent black spot on the caudal peduncle. The bands are generally broader and less defined than those of L. mormyrus.

Annular Seabream

Diplodus annularis

Diplodus annularis is characterized by a single, distinct black ring around the caudal peduncle and lacks the multiple vertical stripes seen in L. mormyrus. It also has a more rounded body profile.
