Prefers rocky shores, tide pools, crevices, and areas with boulders and stones. Also found in seagrass beds and estuaries, tolerating a range of salinities. It is a demersal species, spending most of its time on or near the bottom.

Widespread in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, including the British Isles, the North Sea, and along the European and African coasts from Norway to Senegal. Also present throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
