Descrizione

Gobius paganellus, commonly known as the Rock Goby, is a demersal fish belonging to the family Gobiidae. It is a robust and relatively large goby, characterized by its cryptic coloration and strong association with rocky substrates in coastal marine and brackish environments. This species is well-adapted to life in intertidal and shallow subtidal zones, often found in tide pools and under rocks, exhibiting territorial behavior.

Caratteristiche fisiche

Forma del corpo
elongated
Colorazione
Variable, typically mottled brown, grey, or olive-green, often with darker blotches and spots that provide excellent camouflage against rocky backgrounds. The first dorsal fin usually has a distinctive orange or reddish margin, particularly prominent in males during breeding season. The operculum (gill cover) often features a dark, iridescent blue-black spot.
Tipo di squame
ctenoid
Posizione della bocca
terminal
Caratteristiche distintive
Robust body, reaching up to 12-13 cm in length, occasionally up to 15 cm., Large head with prominent eyes., Two dorsal fins, the first with 6-7 spines, the second with 1 spine and 13-15 soft rays., Anal fin with 1 spine and 11-13 soft rays., Pectoral fins are large and rounded., Pelvic fins are fused to form a suction cup-like disc, characteristic of gobies, used for adhering to rocks., Lateral line absent., Scales are ctenoid on the body, cycloid on the head and nape.
Pinna dorsale
Two dorsal fins. The first dorsal fin is higher and spiny (D1 VI-VII), often with a distinctive orange or reddish margin. The second dorsal fin is longer and soft-rayed (D2 I/13-15).
Pinna caudale
Caudal fin is rounded.
Pinna pettorale
Large and rounded, typically with 18-20 rays.
Pinne distintive
Pelvic fins are fused into a prominent, cup-shaped adhesive disc (frenum present), located anterior to the anal fin.

Consigli per l'identificazione

First Dorsal Fin Margin

Look for the distinctive orange or reddish margin on the first dorsal fin, especially noticeable in males.

Opercular Spot

A dark, often iridescent blue-black spot on the upper part of the operculum (gill cover) is a key identifier.

Body Coloration and Pattern

Mottled brown/grey/olive coloration with darker blotches for camouflage. The overall robust appearance helps distinguish it from smaller, more slender gobies.

Pelvic Fin Disc

The fused pelvic fins forming a suction cup are characteristic of gobies, but its size and shape can be a distinguishing feature among different goby species.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
saltwater
Profondità
Typically found in shallow waters from the intertidal zone down to about 15-20 meters, occasionally deeper (up to 50 meters).
Ambiente
Prefers rocky shores, tide pools, crevices, and areas with boulders and stones. Also found in seagrass beds and estuaries, tolerating a range of salinities. It is a demersal species, spending most of its time on or near the bottom.
Areale geografico
Widespread in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, including the British Isles, the North Sea, and along the European and African coasts from Norway to Senegal. Also present throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

  • Dieta: carnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: 80 liters (20 gallons) for a single specimen, larger for multiple or community tanks
  • Temperatura: 15-24°C (59-75°F)
  • Livello di pH: 7.8-8.4
  • Durezza: 1.020-1.025 SG
  • Compatibilità: Can be kept with other robust, non-aggressive marine fish of similar size. May be territorial towards conspecifics or other gobies, especially in smaller tanks. Avoid very small or delicate invertebrates as they may be preyed upon.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires ample rockwork, caves, and crevices for shelter and territory establishment. A sand or fine gravel substrate is beneficial for burrowing. Good water quality and stable parameters are crucial. Provide a varied diet of meaty foods.

Informazioni in natura

Fatti chiave

Intertidal Masterbehavior

The Rock Goby is exceptionally well-adapted to the harsh conditions of the intertidal zone, capable of surviving periods of emersion by hiding in damp crevices or under rocks.

Parental Carebehavior

Male Rock Gobies exhibit strong parental care, guarding the eggs laid by the female under rocks or shells until they hatch. They fan the eggs to ensure oxygenation and protect them from predators.

Camouflage Expertbehavior

Their mottled coloration allows them to blend seamlessly with their rocky surroundings, making them difficult to spot by both predators and prey.

Suction Poweramazing

The fused pelvic fins form a powerful suction cup, enabling them to cling firmly to rocks in strong currents and wave action, preventing them from being dislodged.

Dietary Opportunistbehavior

While primarily carnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans, worms, and mollusks, they are opportunistic and will consume whatever small invertebrates are available in their habitat.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: edible
  • Note sul maneggio: Generally harmless. Can nip if handled carelessly, but their small teeth pose no significant threat. Handle with wet hands to protect their slime coat if releasing.

Specie simili

Common Goby

Pomatoschistus microps

Smaller size (typically up to 6-7 cm), more slender body, and lacks the prominent orange margin on the first dorsal fin and the opercular spot of Gobius paganellus. Often found in sandy or muddy substrates rather than rocky ones.

Sand Goby

Pomatoschistus minutus

Similar to the Common Goby in size and body shape, but typically has a more elongated body and a distinct dark spot at the base of the pectoral fin. Prefers sandy bottoms.

Giant Goby

Gobius cobitis

Significantly larger (up to 27 cm), with a more elongated and robust body. It has a more pronounced head and a different pattern of dark spots and bands. Also prefers rocky intertidal zones but is generally larger and more heavily built.

Black-mouthed Goby

Neogobius melanostomus

Distinguished by a prominent black spot on the anterior part of the first dorsal fin and a black mouth lining. It is an invasive species in many areas, often found in brackish and freshwater environments as well as marine.
