Descrizione

Acipenser sturio, commonly known as the Atlantic Sturgeon, is a large, anadromous fish belonging to the family Acipenseridae. It is characterized by its ancient, cartilaginous skeleton, five rows of bony scutes along its body, and a heterocercal tail. This species is highly migratory, spending most of its life in marine and brackish waters, but migrating to freshwater rivers for spawning. It is a long-lived species, reaching sexual maturity late in life, and is critically endangered due to overfishing, habitat degradation, and pollution.

Caratteristiche fisiche

Forma del corpo
elongated
Colorazione
Dorsal surface typically greyish-brown to olive-green, fading to lighter grey or white on the ventral side. Scutes are often lighter in color, sometimes yellowish or whitish.
Tipo di squame
none
Posizione della bocca
inferior
Caratteristiche distintive
Five rows of prominent bony scutes: one dorsal, two lateral, and two ventral. The dorsal scutes are largest and most distinct., Four barbels located anterior to the mouth, closer to the snout tip than to the mouth., Protrusible, ventral mouth, typically toothless in adults., Elongated, conical snout., Heterocercal caudal fin (upper lobe longer than lower lobe).
Pinna dorsale
Single dorsal fin, located far back on the body, with 30-45 soft rays.
Pinna caudale
Heterocercal caudal fin, deeply forked, with the upper lobe significantly longer than the lower lobe.
Pinna pettorale
Paired pectoral fins, relatively large and triangular.
Pinne distintive
Pelvic fins are abdominal, located posterior to the pectoral fins. All fins are supported by cartilaginous rays.

Consigli per l'identificazione

Scutes

Count the five rows of bony scutes. The dorsal scutes are particularly prominent and keeled.

Barbels

Observe the four barbels. In Acipenser sturio, they are positioned closer to the tip of the snout than to the mouth.

Snout Shape

The snout is relatively long and conical, tapering to a point.

Mouth Position

The mouth is inferior and protrusible, located on the underside of the head.

Caudal Fin

The heterocercal tail, with its longer upper lobe, is a characteristic feature of sturgeons.

Habitat

Tipo di acqua
brackish
Profondità
Typically found in coastal marine waters, estuaries, and large freshwater rivers. In marine environments, they can inhabit depths from shallow coastal areas to over 100 meters.
Ambiente
Anadromous, spending most of its life in coastal marine waters and estuaries, migrating into large, free-flowing rivers with gravel or rocky bottoms for spawning. Requires clean, well-oxygenated water.
Areale geografico
Historically widespread along the Atlantic coast of Europe, from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Currently, its range is severely restricted, with the Gironde-Garonne-Dordogne river system in France being the last significant spawning population. Reintroduction efforts are underway in other historical ranges.

Informazioni sull'acquario

  • Livello di cura: expert
  • Temperamento: peaceful
  • Dieta: carnivore
  • Dimensione minima della vasca: Not suitable for home aquaria; requires vast, specialized public aquarium facilities.
  • Temperatura: 10-20°C (50-68°F)
  • Livello di pH: 7.0-8.5
  • Durezza: Moderate to hard (10-25 dGH)
  • Compatibilità: Generally compatible with other large, peaceful fish in appropriate environments, but its size and specific needs make it unsuitable for typical community tanks.
  • Requisiti speciali: Requires extremely large, specialized facilities with strong filtration, significant water flow, and a diet of benthic invertebrates and small fish. Not recommended for private aquarists due to its size, migratory nature, and critically endangered status.

Informazioni in natura

  • Stato di conservazione: critically endangered
  • Stagionalità: Spawning migrations occur in spring (April-June) in freshwater rivers. Juveniles remain in freshwater for 1-5 years before migrating to sea. Adults return to rivers every 2-5 years to spawn.
  • Prezzo di mercato: Historically very high, particularly for caviar; currently illegal to fish or trade in most regions due to conservation status.
  • Importanza commerciale: none
  • Sapore: Historically prized for its firm, white, flaky flesh, often described as having a mild, rich flavor.
  • Consistenza: Firm, meaty, and flaky.
  • Metodi di cottura: Grilled, Smoked, Baked, Steamed
  • Valore nutrizionale: High in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and various vitamins and minerals. Caviar (roe) is also highly nutritious.

Fatti chiave

Living Fossilevolution

Sturgeons are often referred to as 'living fossils' because their morphology has changed very little over millions of years, retaining primitive characteristics.

Long Lifespanamazing

Atlantic Sturgeons are incredibly long-lived, with individuals known to live for over 60 years, and some reports suggesting up to 100 years.

Late Maturitybehavior

Females typically reach sexual maturity between 8-20 years of age, and males between 7-15 years, making them highly vulnerable to overfishing.

Anadromous Migratorsbehavior

These fish undertake extensive migrations, traveling from marine feeding grounds into freshwater rivers to spawn, sometimes covering hundreds of kilometers.

Caviar Sourceinteresting

Historically, the Atlantic Sturgeon was a primary source of high-quality caviar, leading to intense fishing pressure that contributed to its decline.

Informazioni di sicurezza

Sicuro
  • Livello di sicurezza: safe
  • Velenoso: No
  • Commestibilità: not recommended
  • Note sul maneggio: Atlantic Sturgeons are large and powerful fish. While not venomous, their bony scutes can be sharp, and a thrashing fish can cause injury. Handling should be minimized and performed by trained professionals, especially given their critically endangered status. Always prioritize the welfare of the fish and adhere to all conservation regulations.

Specie simili

Baltic Sturgeon

Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus

Historically, A. sturio and A. oxyrinchus were often confused. A. oxyrinchus typically has a shorter, blunter snout, and its barbels are usually closer to the mouth than to the snout tip. Genetic analysis is often required for definitive differentiation, especially in areas of historical sympatry or reintroduction.

Adriatic Sturgeon

Acipenser naccarii

A. naccarii generally has a shorter, blunter snout and more numerous, smaller scutes. Its barbels are also typically closer to the mouth. It is primarily found in the Adriatic Sea basin.

Russian Sturgeon

Acipenser gueldenstaedtii

A. gueldenstaedtii has a shorter, more rounded snout and its barbels are located closer to the mouth. The dorsal scutes are less prominent and less keeled than in A. sturio. Primarily found in the Black and Caspian Sea basins.
