Prefers rocky bottoms, seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica), sandy areas near rocks, and sometimes estuaries. Often found in coastal areas, harbors, and around artificial structures. Juveniles are common in very shallow, protected areas.

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the Bay of Biscay to South Africa, including the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and Madeira. Also widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
