Environment

Prefers sandy bottoms, surf zones, seagrass beds, and nearshore reefs. Often found in areas with strong currents where food is abundant. Juveniles frequently inhabit estuaries and protected bays.

Geographic range

Globally distributed in tropical and subtropical waters. Florida Pompano (T. carolinus) is found along the Atlantic coast of the Americas from Massachusetts to Brazil, and throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Permit (T. falcatus) ranges from Massachusetts to Brazil, including the Caribbean. African Pompano (T. africanus) is found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.
