Environment

Coastal waters, including sandy flats, seagrass beds, surf zones, coral reefs, rocky outcrops, and mangrove estuaries. Juveniles often inhabit estuaries and protected shallow areas.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts (rarely) and Bermuda south to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Also found in the eastern Atlantic from Senegal to Angola.
