Typically found in shallow coastal waters, from the intertidal zone down to about 30 meters (100 feet), though occasionally deeper.

Environment

Prefers rocky reefs, coral rubble, sandy or muddy bottoms, and seagrass beds. It often buries itself partially in sand or hides amongst rocks and corals, relying entirely on its camouflage.

Geographic range

Widespread throughout the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa across to French Polynesia, and from southern Japan down to Queensland, Australia.
