Demersal, inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms, often near seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica) or rocky areas. They form large schools, especially juveniles.

Geographic range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean from Portugal to Mauritania, including the Canary Islands. Widespread throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
