Environment

Demersal species, inhabiting sandy, muddy, and gravel bottoms, as well as seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica). They prefer areas with soft substrates where they can forage for benthic invertebrates. They can also be found near rocky reefs.

Geographic range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the British Isles (rarely) south to Angola, including the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores. Widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
