Prefers slow-moving to still waters of rivers, billabongs, lagoons, and swamps. Often found in areas with abundant aquatic vegetation, submerged timber, or rocky crevices, which provide cover for ambush predation. Tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, including turbid waters.

Geographic range

Native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea. In Australia, it is found across northern Queensland, the Northern Territory, and the Kimberley region of Western Australia. In New Guinea, it occurs in the southern drainages.
