Environment

Prefers clear to moderately turbid rivers and large streams with moderate to swift currents, and also found in larger lakes. Substrate preference includes gravel, sand, and rubble. Often associated with riffles and runs, but also found in deeper pools.

Geographic range

Widespread across central and eastern North America. Its range extends from the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes basin south to the Mississippi River basin, west to the Red River of the North, and south to northern Alabama and Georgia. Absent from the Atlantic Slope south of the St. Lawrence River drainage.
