Typically found in depths ranging from 3 to 30 meters (10 to 100 feet), but can be found deeper, up to 60 meters (200 feet).

Environment

Associated with coral reefs, rocky bottoms, seagrass beds, and areas with mixed sand and rubble. They prefer habitats with plenty of structure for shelter and foraging.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Nova Scotia (rarely) and Bermuda, south to Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and throughout the Caribbean Sea to northern South America (Brazil).
