Environment

Prefers rocky reefs, kelp beds, estuaries, and sheltered bays. Often found around wharf piles, jetties, and areas with abundant algal growth. Juveniles frequently inhabit estuaries and mangrove areas.

Geographic range

Southwestern Pacific Ocean, primarily found along the coasts of eastern Australia (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania) and New Zealand (North Island and northern South Island).
