Typically found in shallow to moderate depths (0.5-3 meters), but can inhabit deeper pools.

Environment

Koaro are highly adaptable, inhabiting a wide range of freshwater environments including fast-flowing, rocky streams and rivers, waterfalls (which they can climb), lakes, and even some estuarine areas. They prefer clear, cool, well-oxygenated water with plenty of cover such as boulders, logs, and undercut banks. Juveniles are often found in slower-moving waters or estuaries before migrating upstream.

Geographic range

Endemic to New Zealand (both North and South Islands, Stewart Island, and Chatham Islands) and southeastern Australia (Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales).
