Geographic range

Widely distributed in eastern North America, primarily in the Ohio River basin, Great Lakes basin (excluding Lake Superior), and parts of the Mississippi River basin. Its range extends from New York and Pennsylvania west to Wisconsin and Iowa, and south to northern Alabama and Georgia.
