Environment

Prefers clear, vegetated lakes, ponds, slow-moving rivers, and swamps. Often found in areas with dense aquatic vegetation (lily pads, submerged grasses) which it uses for ambush hunting and cover. Tolerant of a wide range of water conditions.

Geographic range

Eastern North America, from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick south to Florida, and west to Texas and Oklahoma. Its range extends north into the Great Lakes basin in some areas.
