Typically found in depths ranging from 2 to 100 meters (6 to 330 feet), but most commonly observed between 10 and 30 meters (33 to 100 feet).

Environment

Associated with coral reefs, rocky bottoms, and areas with rubble and seagrass beds. They prefer areas with plenty of crevices and ledges for shelter and ambush points. Juveniles may inhabit shallower seagrass beds.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Bermuda and North Carolina (USA) south through the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and along the coast of South America to Brazil. Absent from the northern Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas.
