Typically found in shallow coastal waters, estuaries, lagoons, and even freshwater rivers and lakes. Ranges from intertidal zones to depths of about 25 meters (82 feet).

Environment

Prefers soft substrates such as sand, mud, or shell hash, where it can bury itself. Commonly found in seagrass beds, mangrove areas, and river mouths. Tolerates a wide range of salinities, from full marine to completely fresh water.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Chesapeake Bay (Virginia, USA) south along the U.S. coast to Florida, and throughout the Gulf of Mexico, including the coasts of Mexico and Central America. Also found in some freshwater systems in Florida, such as the St. Johns River.
