Typically found in shallow coastal waters (0-100 meters), but some species inhabit deeper continental shelves (up to several hundred meters). A few species are euryhaline and can enter freshwater.

Environment

Primarily benthic, inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and estuaries. They often bury themselves in the substrate, leaving only their eyes exposed.

Geographic range

Cosmopolitan distribution in tropical, subtropical, and temperate waters worldwide. Found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as various seas and some freshwater systems.
