It is often found among aquatic vegetation or under submerged debris. Tolerant of a range of oxygen levels, but prefers well-oxygenated water.

Geographic range

Widespread across Europe and parts of Asia. Its range extends from Western Europe (e.g., France, UK) eastward through Central and Eastern Europe, into Russia, and parts of Siberia, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia. Absent from Scandinavia (except southern Sweden) and the Iberian Peninsula.
