Environment

Prefers slow-moving or stagnant freshwater bodies such as ponds, lakes, swamps, canals, reservoirs, and muddy rivers. Often found in areas with dense aquatic vegetation, submerged structures, and muddy bottoms, which provide cover for ambush predation. Can tolerate a wide range of water quality, including hypoxic conditions.

Geographic range

Native to parts of Africa and Asia, ranging from Pakistan and Afghanistan eastward through India, Southeast Asia, and parts of China and Korea. Several species have been introduced and established invasive populations in North America (e.g., Northern Snakehead, Channa argus) and other parts of the world.
