Environment

Prefers sandy or muddy bottoms in sheltered coastal areas, estuaries, lagoons, and sometimes penetrates into freshwater for short periods. Often found near seagrass beds or other submerged vegetation. Forms large, active schools.

Geographic range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the British Isles (including southern Norway and Sweden) south to Mauritania, including the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. Also found around the Canary Islands and Madeira.
