Environment

Benthic, inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms, often near estuaries, bays, and open coastal areas. They prefer soft substrates where they can bury themselves, leaving only their eyes and mouth exposed.

Geographic range

Western Atlantic Ocean, from New York (occasionally Massachusetts) south to North Carolina, and rarely to Florida. Most common from Virginia to North Carolina.
