Prefers rocky bottoms, caves, shipwrecks, and other complex hard-bottom habitats. Juveniles may inhabit shallower coastal areas, including seagrass beds and estuaries, before moving to deeper rocky reefs as they mature. They are solitary and territorial, often occupying a specific den or crevice.

Widely distributed in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean Sea, and along the coasts of Africa from Senegal to South Africa. Also found in the Western Indian Ocean, including Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands, and extending to the coast of Brazil in the Western Atlantic.
