Coastal waters, estuaries, and lower reaches of rivers (saltwater phase); shallow to moderate depths in rivers and streams (freshwater phase).

Miljø

Anadromous species, migrating between marine and freshwater environments. In freshwater, they prefer cool, well-oxygenated rivers and streams with gravelly or stony bottoms for spawning, and areas with cover (undercut banks, submerged vegetation, boulders). In saltwater, they inhabit coastal areas, estuaries, and fjords, often staying relatively close to shore.

Geografisk udbredelse

Widespread across Europe, from Iceland and Norway south to the Iberian Peninsula, and east to the Baltic Sea and parts of the Black Sea basin. Also introduced to other parts of the world.
