Widespread in the Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea, and extending into the Pacific Ocean (where it was historically confused with Scomber japonicus). Its range includes the eastern Atlantic from the British Isles south to South Africa, and the western Atlantic from Nova Scotia to Argentina. Also found in the Indo-Pacific, though its distribution there is more complex and overlaps with S. japonicus.
