Açıklama

Oblada melanura, commonly known as the saddled seabream or melanur, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Sparidae, the seabreams and porgies. It is a schooling fish, typically found in coastal waters over rocky or sandy bottoms, and seagrass beds. It is characterized by its silvery body and a prominent black spot on the caudal peduncle, which gives it its common name.

Tanımlama İpuçları

Black Spot

The most reliable identification feature is the distinct, saddle-shaped black spot on the caudal peduncle, just before the tail fin. This spot is usually very clear and well-defined.

Body Shape and Color

Its silvery, compressed, and oval body, combined with the black spot, makes it relatively easy to distinguish from other seabreams. The overall coloration is generally uniform silvery-grey.

Fin Count

Counting the dorsal fin spines (11-12) and soft rays (12-14) can help confirm identification, especially when differentiating from very similar species.

Yaşam Alanı

Su tipi
saltwater
Derinlik
Typically found from the surface down to about 30 meters, occasionally deeper to 60 meters.
Ortam
Prefers coastal waters, rocky reefs, sandy bottoms, and seagrass beds (Posidonia oceanica meadows). Often found in schools, especially juveniles.
Coğrafi dağılım
Eastern Atlantic Ocean from the Bay of Biscay to Angola, including the Canary Islands, Madeira, and Cape Verde. Also widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

Temel Bilgiler

Schooling Behaviorbehavior

Oblada melanura is known for forming large schools, especially juveniles, which provides protection against predators and aids in foraging efficiency.

Dietary Flexibilitybehavior

While primarily carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates and zooplankton, it also consumes algae, demonstrating an opportunistic omnivorous diet.

Hermaphroditismevolution

Like many Sparidae, Oblada melanura exhibits protogynous hermaphroditism, meaning individuals mature as females and can later change sex to male.

Ecological Rolebehavior

As a mid-level consumer, it plays an important role in coastal ecosystems, controlling populations of smaller invertebrates and serving as prey for larger predatory fish.

Güvenlik Bilgileri

Güvenli
  • Güvenlik seviyesi: safe
  • Zehirli: Hayır
  • Yenilebilirlik: edible
  • Tutma notları: No specific handling precautions are required beyond standard fish handling practices to avoid fin pricks. The spines are not venomous.

Benzer Türler

Annular seabream

Diplodus annularis

Diplodus annularis also has a black spot on the caudal peduncle, but it is typically more circular and less saddle-shaped, and the body often has faint vertical bands. Oblada melanura's spot is more elongated and saddle-like.

White seabream

Diplodus sargus

Diplodus sargus has a more pronounced black band across the caudal peduncle and typically has several distinct vertical black bands on its body, which are absent in Oblada melanura.
