Açıklama

Belone belone, commonly known as the Garfish or Zargana, is a pelagic, schooling fish characterized by its extremely elongated, slender body and distinctive long, narrow jaws filled with sharp teeth. It is a fast-swimming predator found in temperate and subtropical waters of the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Black Sea. Its flesh is edible, though its green bones can sometimes deter consumers.

Tanımlama İpuçları

Body Shape

Look for the extremely long, slender, almost cylindrical body, which is characteristic of the species.

Jaws

The most striking feature is the very long, narrow, beak-like jaws, which are of equal length in adults and armed with numerous sharp teeth. Juveniles have a shorter upper jaw.

Fin Placement

Note the dorsal and anal fins positioned far back on the body, almost opposite each other, close to the caudal fin.

Coloration

Observe the dark blue-green dorsal side and silvery flanks. The green bones are a definitive internal identifier.

Behavior

Garfish are often seen swimming rapidly near the surface, sometimes leaping out of the water when pursued by predators or during feeding frenzies.

Yaşam Alanı

Su tipi
saltwater
Derinlik
Typically found in surface waters (epipelagic zone) down to about 20 meters, but can occur deeper (up to 200 meters) during winter.
Ortam
Pelagic, coastal, and offshore waters. Often found in schools near the surface, especially over seagrass beds or sandy bottoms during spawning. Migrates seasonally.
Coğrafi dağılım
Eastern Atlantic Ocean from Iceland and Norway south to the Azores, Madeira, and Cape Verde. Also present throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

Akvaryum Bilgileri

  • Bakım seviyesi: expert
  • Mizaç: aggressive
  • Beslenme: carnivore
  • Minimum tank boyutu: Not suitable for typical home aquariums due to size, speed, and specialized feeding requirements. Requires very large, specialized public aquaria.
  • Sıcaklık: 15-25°C
  • pH seviyesi: 7.8-8.4
  • Sertlik: 1.020-1.025 SG
  • Uyumluluk: Not compatible with most other species due to predatory nature and high activity levels. Best kept in species-specific exhibits or with very large, fast-moving pelagic fish.
  • Özel gereksinimler: Requires extremely large, open tanks with strong filtration and water movement. Highly prone to injury from striking tank walls due to its speed and elongated snout. Live food or very specific frozen prey presentation is necessary.

Doğal Yaşam Bilgileri

  • Koruma durumu: least concern
  • Mevsimsellik: Typically found closer to shore in spring and summer for spawning, moving to deeper, offshore waters in autumn and winter.
  • Piyasa fiyatı: Moderate
  • Ticari önem: medium
  • Tat: Mild, slightly oily, distinct fish flavor
  • Doku: Firm, flaky white flesh
  • Pişirme yöntemleri: Grilled, Fried, Baked, Smoked
  • Besin değeri: Good source of protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins B6 and B12.

Temel Bilgiler

Green Bonesinteresting

The bones of the Zargana are famously green due to the presence of biliverdin, a bile pigment. This is harmless and does not affect the taste or edibility of the fish, though it can be surprising to those unfamiliar with it.

Leaping Predatorbehavior

Zargana are highly agile predators that often leap out of the water, especially when pursuing prey or attempting to escape from larger predators. This behavior is also observed when they are hooked by anglers.

Seasonal Migrationsbehavior

These fish undertake significant seasonal migrations, moving into shallower coastal waters during spring and summer for spawning, and then retreating to deeper, offshore areas during the colder months.

Juvenile Jaw Developmentevolution

Juvenile Zargana initially have a shorter upper jaw compared to their lower jaw, resembling halfbeaks. As they mature, the upper jaw grows to match the length of the lower jaw, forming the characteristic long, equal-length 'beak' of the adult.

Güvenlik Bilgileri

Dikkatli tutun
  • Güvenlik seviyesi: caution
  • Zehirli: Hayır
  • Yenilebilirlik: edible
  • Tutma notları: Garfish have sharp teeth and can inflict painful bites if handled carelessly. Their rapid movements when caught can also lead to accidental punctures from their beak-like jaws. Handle with care, preferably using gloves or a fish gripper, and be mindful of their thrashing. No venomous spines.

Atlantic Saury

Scomberesox saurus

Atlantic Saury (Scomberesox saurus) has a similar elongated body and beak-like jaws, but it possesses a series of small finlets behind both the dorsal and anal fins, which are absent in Belone belone. Its jaws are also typically shorter and less robust than those of an adult garfish.

Needlefish (various species)

Strongylura spp., Tylosurus spp.

While many needlefish species (family Belonidae) share the elongated body and long jaws, Belone belone is distinguished by its specific fin ray counts, geographic distribution (primarily Eastern Atlantic/Mediterranean), and the characteristic green bones. Other needlefish species often have different jaw proportions (e.g., upper jaw shorter than lower in juveniles) or distinct coloration patterns.

Halfbeaks

Hemiramphus spp., Hyporhamphus spp.

Halfbeaks (family Hemiramphidae) have a very long lower jaw and a much shorter upper jaw, especially in juveniles and many adult species, which is a clear distinction from the equally long jaws of adult Belone belone.
