Açıklama

The Stone Loach (Barbatula barbatula) is a small, benthic freshwater fish belonging to the family Nemacheilidae. It is characterized by its elongated, cylindrical body, cryptic coloration, and six barbels around its mouth, which it uses to forage for food in the substrate. This species is well-adapted to life on the bottom of clear, oxygen-rich streams and rivers, often hiding under stones or in vegetation. It is a nocturnal and crepuscular species, becoming more active during twilight and nighttime hours.

Tanımlama İpuçları

Barbels

Presence of six distinct barbels around the mouth is a key identifier, distinguishing it from many other small benthic fish.

Body Shape and Coloration

Its elongated, cylindrical body and mottled brown/olive coloration with irregular dark blotches are characteristic, providing camouflage against stony substrates.

Scales

The very small, embedded scales give the fish a smooth, almost scaleless appearance, unlike many other freshwater fish with prominent scales.

Fin Position

The single, short dorsal fin positioned centrally on the back, and the rounded pectoral fins, are also helpful identification features.

Yaşam Alanı

Su tipi
freshwater
Derinlik
Typically found in shallow waters, from a few centimeters to a few meters deep.
Ortam
Prefers clear, well-oxygenated rivers, streams, and sometimes lakes with gravel, sand, or stony bottoms. They are often found in areas with moderate to fast currents, where they can hide under rocks, logs, or dense vegetation. They avoid silty or heavily polluted waters.
Coğrafi dağılım
Widespread across Europe and parts of Asia. Its range extends from Ireland and Great Britain eastward through much of continental Europe (excluding southern Iberia, southern Italy, and Greece) into Russia and parts of Siberia.

Akvaryum Bilgileri

  • Bakım seviyesi: intermediate
  • Mizaç: peaceful
  • Beslenme: omnivore
  • Minimum tank boyutu: 20 gallons (75 liters) for a small group
  • Sıcaklık: 10-20°C (50-68°F)
  • pH seviyesi: 6.5-7.5
  • Sertlik: 5-15 dGH
  • Uyumluluk: Compatible with other peaceful, coldwater fish species that do not outcompete them for food or space. Avoid aggressive or very large tank mates.
  • Özel gereksinimler: Requires a well-oxygenated tank with a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate to protect their delicate barbels. Plenty of hiding places such as smooth rocks, driftwood, and dense planting are essential. Good filtration and regular water changes are crucial as they are sensitive to poor water quality. They prefer cooler water temperatures.

Doğal Yaşam Bilgileri

  • Koruma durumu: least concern
  • Mevsimsellik: Spawns from April to June, with peak activity in May. More active and visible during warmer months, but present year-round.
  • Piyasa fiyatı: Low to none (not typically a commercial food fish)
  • Ticari önem: none
  • Tat: Mild, slightly earthy
  • Doku: Soft, delicate
  • Pişirme yöntemleri: Frying, Pan-searing, Stewing
  • Besin değeri: Low in fat, good source of protein. Not commonly consumed due to small size and bony nature.

Temel Bilgiler

Nocturnal Foragerbehavior

Stone Loaches are primarily nocturnal, using their sensitive barbels to locate small invertebrates and detritus in the substrate under the cover of darkness.

Excellent Camouflageinteresting

Their mottled coloration and ability to remain motionless make them incredibly difficult to spot against a stony riverbed, providing effective camouflage from predators.

Indicator Speciesinteresting

Due to their preference for clear, well-oxygenated water, Stone Loaches can serve as an indicator species for good water quality in freshwater ecosystems.

Substrate Dwellerbehavior

They spend almost their entire lives on or within the substrate, rarely swimming in the open water column, which is reflected in their elongated body shape and inferior mouth.

Güvenlik Bilgileri

Güvenli
  • Güvenlik seviyesi: safe
  • Zehirli: Hayır
  • Yenilebilirlik: not recommended
  • Tutma notları: Stone Loaches are harmless to handle. They are small and delicate, so care should be taken to minimize stress if caught or handled. Return them to their habitat quickly and gently. They do not possess any sharp spines or venomous glands.

Benzer Türler

Spined Loach

Cobitis taenia

The Spined Loach has a distinct erectile spine beneath each eye, which the Stone Loach lacks. Spined Loaches also tend to have a more compressed body laterally and a row of dark spots along the lateral line, whereas Stone Loaches are more cylindrical and mottled.

Weather Loach

Misgurnus fossilis

Weather Loaches are generally larger, more eel-like, and have a more uniform brownish coloration with fewer distinct blotches. They also possess 10 barbels around the mouth, compared to the Stone Loach's six.

Golden Loach

Sabanejewia aurata

Golden Loaches are typically smaller and have a more distinct pattern of dark spots or bands along the flanks, often with a golden or yellowish hue. They also possess a suborbital spine, similar to the Spined Loach, which is absent in the Stone Loach.
