Opis

Otocinclus, commonly known as Otos or Dwarf Suckermouth Catfish, are a genus of small, armored catfish belonging to the family Loricariidae. They are highly valued in the aquarium hobby for their voracious appetite for algae and their peaceful nature. These fish are characterized by their small size, typically reaching 3-5 cm (1.2-2 inches) in length, and their ventral suckermouth, which they use to cling to surfaces and graze on biofilm and algae. They are primarily nocturnal but can be observed feeding during the day in well-established aquariums. Otocinclus species are social fish and thrive in groups.

Fizične značilnosti

Oblika telesa
elongated
Obarvanost
Generally mottled brown, grey, or olive green with a distinct dark lateral stripe running from the snout to the caudal fin. Some species exhibit iridescent patches or subtle banding. The ventral side is typically lighter, often whitish or pale yellow. Coloration can vary slightly between species and individuals, and can also change based on stress or environment.
Vrsta lusk
none
Položaj ust
inferior
Razpoznavne značilnosti
Ventral suckermouth with papillae for adhesion and scraping., Small, armored plates covering the body., Adipose fin absent in most species., Relatively large eyes., Sexual dimorphism is subtle; females are often slightly larger and plumper, especially when gravid.
Hrbtna plavut
Single dorsal fin, typically with 1 spine and 7-8 soft rays. Positioned mid-body.
Repna plavut
Forked or emarginate caudal fin.
Prsna plavut
Pectoral fins are broad and positioned ventrally, often used for support and maneuvering. They contain a spine and several soft rays.
Razpoznavne plavuti
Pelvic fins are also ventrally located. All fins are generally clear or slightly dusky, sometimes with faint banding.

Nasveti za prepoznavanje

Size and Shape

Small, slender body, typically 3-5 cm (1.2-2 inches) in length, with a flattened ventral surface and a distinct suckermouth.

Coloration

Mottled brown/grey/olive with a prominent dark lateral stripe. Lighter ventral side.

Mouth

Ventral suckermouth, clearly visible, used for clinging and grazing.

Behavior

Often seen clinging to tank surfaces (glass, plants, decor) and constantly grazing. They are active and social, typically moving in small groups.

Habitat

Vrsta vode
freshwater
Globina
Typically found in shallow, well-oxygenated waters, often near the surface or in the mid-water column where submerged vegetation and driftwood are abundant.
Okolje
Native to clear, fast-flowing streams, rivers, and flooded forest areas in South America. They prefer areas with dense aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, driftwood, and rocky substrates, where they can graze on periphyton and biofilm. They are often found in tributaries and marginal zones rather than the main river channels.
Geografska razširjenost
Widely distributed across South America, primarily in the Amazon basin, Orinoco basin, and various coastal drainages. Specific species have more restricted ranges, but the genus as a whole is found in countries such as Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina.

Podatki o akvariju

  • Stopnja zahtevnosti nege: intermediate
  • Temperament: peaceful
  • Prehrana: herbivore
  • Najmanjša velikost akvarija: 10 gallons
  • Temperatura: 21-26°C (70-79°F)
  • Vrednost pH: 6.0-7.5
  • Trdota vode: 2-15 dGH
  • Združljivost: Excellent with most peaceful community fish, including tetras, rasboras, small gouramis, and other small, non-aggressive bottom dwellers. Avoid housing with large, aggressive, or predatory fish that may view them as prey.
  • Posebne zahteve: Otocinclus require a well-established aquarium with mature biofilm and algae growth. They are sensitive to fluctuating water parameters and require excellent water quality. Provide plenty of hiding spots among plants, driftwood, and rocks. They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior. Supplemental feeding with blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach) and algae wafers is often necessary, especially in tanks with limited natural algae.

Podatki iz narave

  • Status ogroženosti: least concern
  • Sezonskost: Reproduction in the wild is often linked to seasonal rainfall and food availability, but specific seasonal patterns for all species are not well-documented. They are generally available year-round in the aquarium trade due to wild collection and some captive breeding.
  • Tržna cena: Typically $3-$8 per fish, depending on species and supplier.
  • Komercialni pomen: medium
  • Okus: Not typically consumed due to their small size and bony nature.
  • Tekstura: Not applicable.
  • Hranilna vrednost: Not applicable.

Ključna dejstva

Algae Eaters Extraordinairebehavior

Otocinclus are renowned for their exceptional ability to consume various types of algae, including diatoms (brown algae), making them highly sought after in the aquarium hobby for natural algae control.

Social Creaturesbehavior

These fish are highly social and thrive when kept in groups of six or more. Keeping them in insufficient numbers can lead to stress, shyness, and a reduced lifespan.

Sensitive to Water Qualityinteresting

Otocinclus are particularly sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters and poor water quality. They require a well-cycled and stable aquarium environment to survive and flourish.

Armored Protectionevolution

Like many Loricariids, Otocinclus possess bony plates covering their bodies, providing a degree of protection against predators.

No Adipose Fininteresting

Unlike many other catfish species, most Otocinclus species lack an adipose fin, a small fleshy fin located between the dorsal and caudal fins.

Varnostne informacije

Varna
  • Stopnja varnosti: safe
  • Strupena: Ne
  • Užitnost: not recommended
  • Opombe o ravnanju: Otocinclus are delicate fish. When handling for transfer or examination, use a soft net or a container to minimize stress and avoid damaging their delicate fins or armored plates. Avoid prolonged exposure to air. They are not known to bite or pose any physical threat to humans.

Podobne vrste

Panaque

Panaque spp.

Panaque species are generally much larger (up to 60 cm), have a more robust body, and possess spoon-shaped teeth adapted for rasping wood, unlike the fine teeth of Otocinclus used for algae.

Ancistrus

Ancistrus spp. (Bristlenose Plecos)

Ancistrus are typically larger (up to 15 cm), possess prominent fleshy tentacles (bristles) on their snout (especially males), and have a more flattened, broader body shape compared to the slender Otocinclus.

Farlowella

Farlowella spp. (Twig Catfish)

Farlowella have extremely elongated, stick-like bodies and a very long, slender snout, making them easily distinguishable from the more compact Otocinclus.

Hypoptopoma

Hypoptopoma spp.

Hypoptopoma are also small Loricariids but typically have a much flatter, wider head and body, and often a more cryptic, leaf-like appearance. Their eyes are often positioned more dorsally.
