Opis

Acipenser, commonly known as sturgeon, is a genus of ray-finned fish belonging to the family Acipenseridae. These ancient fish are characterized by their elongated bodies, heterocercal tails, and rows of bony plates called scutes instead of scales. They are anadromous or potamodromous, meaning they migrate between saltwater and freshwater or within freshwater systems for spawning. Sturgeons are renowned for their longevity, slow growth, and late sexual maturity, making them particularly vulnerable to overfishing and habitat degradation. They are highly valued for their roe (caviar) and meat.

Fizične značilnosti

Oblika telesa
elongated
Obarvanost
Dorsal coloration typically ranges from dark grey, olive-brown, or black, fading to lighter grey or white on the ventral side. Some species may have mottled patterns.
Vrsta lusk

Položaj ust
inferior
Razpoznavne značilnosti
Five longitudinal rows of bony scutes (dorsal, two lateral, two ventral) instead of scales., Four barbels located anterior to the mouth, used for foraging., Protrusible, toothless mouth located ventrally., Heterocercal caudal fin (upper lobe longer than lower lobe)., Cartilaginous skeleton (partially ossified in some areas).
Hrbtna plavut
Single dorsal fin, located far back on the body, typically with 30-50 soft rays.
Repna plavut
Heterocercal caudal fin, deeply forked, with the upper lobe significantly longer and containing the vertebral column.
Prsna plavut
Paired pectoral fins, relatively large and triangular.
Razpoznavne plavuti
Pelvic fins are abdominal. All fins are supported by cartilaginous rays.

Nasveti za prepoznavanje

Scutes

Count the number and arrangement of the five rows of bony scutes. The number of scutes within each row can be a key differentiator between species.

Barbels

Examine the position, length, and fimbriation (fringing) of the four barbels located in front of the mouth. For example, in some species, barbels are closer to the snout, while in others, they are closer to the mouth.

Snout Shape

Observe the shape and length of the snout, which can be pointed, rounded, or shovel-like, varying significantly among species.

Mouth Size and Shape

Note the size and shape of the protrusible mouth, as well as the presence or absence of a median labial cleft.

Body Coloration

While variable, general dorsal and ventral coloration patterns can aid in identification, especially when combined with other features.

Habitat

Vrsta vode
freshwater
Globina
Varies by species and life stage; typically found in deeper sections of rivers, estuaries, and coastal marine waters, but migrate to shallower, faster-flowing waters for spawning.
Okolje
Large rivers, estuaries, coastal marine waters, and some large freshwater lakes. They prefer benthic habitats with soft substrates (sand, mud, gravel) where they can forage.
Geografska razširjenost
Northern Hemisphere, including North America (Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts, Great Lakes, Mississippi River basin), Europe (Black, Caspian, Azov, Adriatic, Baltic, North Seas, and associated rivers), and Asia (Siberian rivers, Pacific coast).

Podatki o akvariju

  • Stopnja zahtevnosti nege: expert
  • Temperament: peaceful
  • Prehrana: carnivore
  • Najmanjša velikost akvarija: Not suitable for typical home aquariums; requires extremely large, specialized facilities or ponds.
  • Temperatura: 10-20°C (50-68°F) depending on species
  • Vrednost pH: 6.5-8.0
  • Trdota vode: 5-20 dGH
  • Združljivost: Generally compatible with other large, peaceful, coldwater fish, but their size and specific needs make cohabitation challenging. Best kept in species-specific setups.
  • Posebne zahteve: Requires extremely large, well-filtered, and oxygenated tanks or ponds with strong water flow. Sensitive to poor water quality and high temperatures. Substrate should be soft to protect their barbels. Not recommended for amateur aquarists due to their size, specialized care, and conservation status.

Podatki iz narave

  • Status ogroženosti: critically endangered
  • Sezonskost: Spawning seasons vary by species and geographic location, typically occurring in spring or early summer. Commercial fishing is heavily restricted or banned for most species due to conservation concerns.
  • Tržna cena: Extremely high, especially for caviar (e.g., Beluga caviar can fetch thousands of dollars per kilogram).
  • Komercialni pomen: high
  • Okus: Mild, rich, and buttery, often described as having a delicate flavor.
  • Tekstura: Firm, flaky, and meaty, similar to swordfish or halibut.
  • Načini priprave: Grilling, Baking, Smoking, Pan-frying, Steaming
  • Hranilna vrednost: High in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and various vitamins and minerals (e.g., B12, D, selenium).

Ključna dejstva

Living Fossilsevolution

Sturgeons are often referred to as 'living fossils' because their morphology has changed very little over the past 200 million years, making them one of the oldest groups of bony fish.

Caviar Sourceinteresting

The roe (eggs) of sturgeon are highly prized as caviar, a luxury food item. Different species produce different types of caviar, such as Beluga, Osetra, and Sevruga.

Exceptional Longevityrecord

Many sturgeon species are incredibly long-lived, with some individuals, like the Beluga sturgeon, known to live for over 100 years.

Anadromous Migratorsbehavior

Most sturgeon species are anadromous, meaning they spend most of their lives in saltwater but migrate to freshwater rivers to spawn. Some are potamodromous, migrating within freshwater systems.

Conservation Crisisinteresting

Almost all species of sturgeon are listed as endangered or critically endangered due to overfishing (primarily for caviar), habitat loss, and pollution, making them one of the most threatened groups of animals on Earth.

Varnostne informacije

Ravnajte previdno
  • Stopnja varnosti: caution
  • Strupena: Ne
  • Užitnost: edible
  • Opombe o ravnanju: Sturgeons are large, powerful fish and should be handled with care to avoid injury to both the fish and the handler. Their scutes can be sharp, and their thrashing can cause bruising or cuts. Always support the body adequately when lifting and minimize out-of-water time. Due to their endangered status, handling should be done by experienced professionals, and any accidental catches should be released quickly and carefully.

Podobne vrste

Paddlefish

Polyodon spathula

Paddlefish have an extremely long, paddle-like rostrum and lack the distinct rows of bony scutes characteristic of sturgeons. They are filter feeders, unlike the benthic foraging sturgeons.

Siberian Sturgeon

Acipenser baerii

Distinguished from other Acipenser species by specific counts of dorsal, lateral, and ventral scutes, snout shape (typically rounded), and barbel characteristics. Often confused with Russian Sturgeon (A. gueldenstaedtii) but generally has a more rounded snout and different scute counts.

Beluga Sturgeon

Huso huso

While closely related and often grouped with Acipenser, Beluga (genus Huso) is distinct. It is the largest freshwater fish, characterized by a very large, crescent-shaped mouth, and barbels that are flattened and leaf-like, closer to the mouth than the tip of the snout. Its scutes are also less prominent in very large individuals.
