Also found in lakes and reservoirs, particularly in areas with inflowing rivers. Tolerant of some turbidity and can adapt to slightly brackish conditions in estuaries.

Widespread across Europe, from the British Isles and Scandinavia (southern parts) to the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, and eastward into Russia and parts of Asia Minor. Absent from Ireland and northern Scandinavia.
