Descrição

Trichogaster trichopterus, commonly known as the Blue Gourami or Three Spot Gourami, is a labyrinth fish native to Southeast Asia. It is a popular aquarium fish due to its attractive coloration, relatively peaceful temperament, and hardiness. The 'Blue Gourami' specifically refers to a color morph of this species, characterized by a vibrant blue body with two distinct dark spots on its flanks, in addition to the eye which forms a 'third spot'. Like other anabantoids, it possesses a labyrinth organ, allowing it to breathe atmospheric air, which enables it to survive in oxygen-depleted waters.

Características físicas

Formato do corpo

Coloração
The 'Blue Gourami' morph exhibits a iridescent blue body, often with darker blue or black mottling. Two prominent dark spots are typically present on each flank: one centrally located on the body and another at the caudal peduncle. The eye forms a 'third spot'. Fins are often tinged with blue and may have orange or red margins, particularly in males. Other cultivated morphs include Gold (yellow-orange), Opaline (marbled blue and white), and Platinum (pale, almost white).

Pelvic fins are modified into long, thin, thread-like feelers, which are used to explore their environment and for courtship displays.

Dicas de identificação

Body Coloration

Look for the iridescent blue body with two distinct dark spots on the flanks. The eye completes the 'three spot' pattern.

Pelvic Fins

Observe the long, thread-like pelvic fins, which are characteristic of gouramis and used for tactile exploration.

Dorsal Fin Shape

Males typically have a longer, more pointed dorsal fin compared to the shorter, rounded dorsal fin of females.

Size

Adults can reach up to 15 cm (6 inches) in total length, though aquarium specimens are often slightly smaller.

Habitat

Tipo de água

Profundidade
Typically found in shallow, slow-moving or stagnant waters.
Ambiente
Inhabits swamps, canals, ditches, rice paddies, and slow-flowing rivers with dense vegetation. Prefers areas with abundant aquatic plants and submerged roots, which provide cover and foraging opportunities.
Distribuição geográfica
Native to Southeast Asia, specifically the Mekong basin, Chao Phraya basin, and various islands of Indonesia (Sumatra, Borneo, Java). It has been introduced to many other tropical and subtropical regions worldwide due to its popularity in aquaculture and the aquarium trade.

  • Temperamento: semi-aggressive
  • Alimentação: omnivore
  • Tamanho mínimo do aquário: 75 liters (20 gallons) for a single specimen, larger for groups or community tanks.
  • Temperatura: 22-28 °C (72-82 °F)
  • Nível de pH: 6.0-8.0
  • Dureza da água: 5-19 dGH
  • Compatibilidade: Generally compatible with other peaceful to semi-aggressive community fish of similar size. Avoid fin-nippers or overly aggressive species. Males can be territorial towards each other and sometimes towards other labyrinth fish.
  • Requisitos especiais: Requires a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and surface vegetation. A tight-fitting lid is essential as they are known to jump and need access to a layer of warm, humid air above the water surface to properly utilize their labyrinth organ. Avoid strong water currents.

Fatos principais

Labyrinth Organbehavior

Trichogaster trichopterus possesses a specialized respiratory organ called the labyrinth organ, which allows it to breathe atmospheric air directly from the surface. This adaptation enables it to survive in oxygen-poor waters where other fish might perish.

Bubble Nest Buildersbehavior

Males of this species construct elaborate bubble nests at the water surface to house their eggs. They meticulously guard the nest and fry until they are free-swimming.

Tactile Pelvic Finsbehavior

Their long, thread-like pelvic fins are highly sensitive and are used as tactile organs to explore their environment, locate food, and communicate with other fish.

Color Morphsinteresting

Through selective breeding, numerous color morphs of Trichogaster trichopterus have been developed for the aquarium trade, including the Blue, Gold, Opaline, and Platinum Gouramis, all originating from the same wild species.

Historical Taxonomyevolution

Historically, the genus Trichogaster was often referred to as Colisa, and some older literature or common names might still reflect this. However, current taxonomy places the larger gouramis like the Blue Gourami in Trichogaster, while the smaller Dwarf Gourami is in Trichopodus (formerly Colisa).

Informações de segurança

Seguro
  • Nível de segurança: safe
  • Venenoso: Não
  • Comestibilidade: edible
  • Observações de manuseio: No specific handling precautions are required beyond standard fish handling practices to minimize stress and injury to the fish. They do not possess venomous spines.

Pearl Gourami

Trichopodus leerii

Distinguished by its pearlescent spots covering the body and fins, and a distinct black line running from the mouth to the caudal fin. Lacks the two prominent dark spots of T. trichopterus.

Kissing Gourami

Helostoma temminckii

Possesses thick, fleshy lips used for 'kissing' (mouth-fighting or grazing algae). Body shape is generally deeper and more compressed, and coloration is typically pale pink or green, lacking the distinct spots of T. trichopterus.

Dwarf Gourami

Trichogaster lalius (formerly Colisa lalia)

Much smaller in size (up to 5 cm), with distinct vertical red and blue stripes. Lacks the prominent dark spots and overall body shape of T. trichopterus.
