Descrição

Scomberomorus cavalla, commonly known as Cavala-Serra or King Mackerel, is a large, fast-swimming predatory fish belonging to the family Scombridae. It is highly prized in commercial and recreational fisheries due to its size, fighting ability, and culinary value. This species is characterized by its streamlined, fusiform body, indicative of its pelagic, open-water lifestyle. It is a schooling fish, especially when young, and undertakes extensive migrations along coastal waters.

Body Markings

Adult Cavala-Serra (King Mackerel) typically lack spots or stripes on their sides, appearing uniformly silvery below the iridescent blue-green back. This is a key differentiator from Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus maculatus) which have distinct golden-bronze spots.

Lateral Line

Observe the lateral line. In S. cavalla, it makes a sharp, distinct dip below the second dorsal fin, then continues relatively straight to the caudal fin. In contrast, the lateral line of Spanish Mackerel has a more gradual curve.

First Dorsal Fin

The anterior portion of the first dorsal fin is often dark or black, especially in younger individuals, and the fin itself is relatively long.

Size

Cavala-Serra are generally much larger than Spanish Mackerel. While juveniles can be confused, an adult Cavala-Serra will be significantly larger, often exceeding 10 kg (22 lbs) and 1 meter (3.3 feet) in length.

Teeth

Possesses large, triangular, compressed teeth, which are visible when the mouth is open. These are characteristic of its predatory nature.

Habitat

Tipo de água
saltwater
Profundidade
Typically found in surface waters down to about 180 meters (600 feet), but most commonly in the upper 10-70 meters.
Ambiente
Coastal pelagic and oceanic waters, often near reefs, wrecks, and other structures, but also in open water. Prefers clear, warm waters.
Distribuição geográfica
Western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts (USA) south to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Most abundant in the southeastern United States, Gulf of Mexico, and off the coast of Brazil.

Informações sobre aquário

  • Nível de cuidado: expert
  • Temperamento: aggressive

  • Dureza da água: 1.020-1.025 SG
  • Compatibilidade: Not compatible with most other fish due to predatory nature and size. Only suitable for species-specific or very large, robust tankmates in specialized exhibits.
  • Requisitos especiais: Requires immense swimming space, high water quality, strong filtration, and a constant supply of live or fresh dead fish as food. Not a typical aquarium species.

Informações no ambiente natural

  • Estado de conservação: least concern
  • Sazonalidade: Seasonal migrations influence availability. Generally more abundant in warmer months in temperate zones, and year-round in tropical regions. Spawning occurs in warmer waters, typically offshore.
  • Preço de mercado: Varies significantly by region, season, and size, but generally commands a good price due to demand.
  • Importância comercial: high
  • Sabor: Rich, full-flavored, somewhat oily
  • Textura: Firm, flaky, meaty

Fatos principais

Speed Demonamazing

Cavala-Serra are incredibly fast swimmers, capable of bursts of speed exceeding 70 km/h (43 mph), making them formidable predators.

Migratory Habitsbehavior

These fish undertake extensive seasonal migrations, moving to warmer waters in winter and cooler, more productive waters in summer, often covering hundreds or thousands of kilometers.

Top Predatorbehavior

As apex predators in their ecosystem, Cavala-Serra play a crucial role in controlling populations of smaller schooling fish, contributing to the overall health of marine food webs.

Longevityrecord

Cavala-Serra can live for over 20 years, with some individuals reaching up to 26 years, allowing them to grow to impressive sizes.

Mercury Accumulationinteresting

Due to their position high on the food chain and long lifespan, larger and older Cavala-Serra can accumulate significant levels of mercury, a common concern for consumers.

Informações de segurança

Manusear com cuidado
  • Nível de segurança: caution
  • Venenoso: Não
  • Comestibilidade: edible
  • Observações de manuseio: Cavala-Serra possess sharp teeth and can inflict severe bites if handled carelessly. Use gloves and a fish gripper or gaff for larger specimens. Be cautious of their powerful thrashing when landed. Larger individuals can accumulate high levels of mercury, so consumption guidelines should be followed, especially for pregnant women and young children.

Espécies similares

Spanish Mackerel

Scomberomorus maculatus

Spanish Mackerel have distinct golden-bronze spots on their sides, which Cavala-Serra adults lack. The lateral line of S. maculatus has a more gradual curve, not the sharp dip seen in S. cavalla. Spanish Mackerel are also generally smaller.

Cero Mackerel

Scomberomorus regalis

Cero Mackerel have a prominent yellow stripe running along their sides, often with several rows of yellow spots above and below it. Their lateral line also has a more gradual curve than the sharp dip of the Cavala-Serra.

Wahoo

Acanthocybium solandri

Wahoo have distinct vertical blue-black bars on their sides, a much longer and more slender body, and a very long, pointed snout. While also a large scombrid, its coloration and body shape are quite different.
