Typically found in shallow coastal waters, estuaries, bays, and lagoons, from a few inches to about 30 meters (100 feet). Larger adults may move to deeper offshore waters.

Ambiente

Prefers sandy or muddy bottoms, seagrass beds, oyster reefs, and areas with submerged vegetation. Tolerant of a wide range of salinities, from nearly freshwater to full oceanic salinity. Juveniles are highly dependent on estuarine nursery habitats.

Western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts, USA, south to Florida, and throughout the Gulf of Mexico to northern Mexico. Most abundant along the southeastern United States coast and the Gulf Coast.
