Descrição

Salvelinus alpinus, commonly known as Arctic Char, is a cold-water fish in the family Salmonidae, native to Arctic, sub-Arctic, and alpine lakes and coastal waters. It is one of the northernmost freshwater fish species. Arctic Char exhibits a high degree of phenotypic plasticity, leading to numerous morphs and ecotypes adapted to specific local conditions. This species is highly valued for both commercial and recreational fishing due to its excellent flesh quality.

Características físicas

Formato do corpo
torpedo
Coloração
Highly variable depending on habitat, age, and reproductive state. Generally, the back is dark olive to brown, fading to silvery sides and a white belly. During spawning, males develop brilliant red, orange, or yellow bellies and fins, often with distinct white leading edges on the pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins. Non-spawning fish may have pale spots (pink, red, or yellow) on their sides. Anadromous forms are typically more silvery.
Tipo de escama
cycloid
Posição da boca
terminal
Características distintivas
Absence of teeth on the shaft of the vomer (a key differentiator from trout and salmon), Small, embedded scales that are often difficult to see, Adipose fin present, Forked caudal fin, Often exhibits vibrant spawning coloration, particularly in males
Nadadeira dorsal
Single dorsal fin, typically with 10-14 rays.
Nadadeira caudal
Moderately forked caudal fin.
Nadadeira peitoral
Paired pectoral fins, often with white leading edges during spawning.
Nadadeiras características
Adipose fin present between the dorsal and caudal fins, characteristic of salmonids. Pelvic and anal fins also often show white leading edges in spawning individuals.

Dicas de identificação

Vomerine Teeth

Unlike true trout (Oncorhynchus) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), Arctic Char typically lack teeth on the shaft of the vomer bone in the roof of the mouth. This is a crucial diagnostic feature.

Coloration and Spots

Observe the body coloration and spots. Arctic Char often have pale (pink, red, yellow) spots on a darker background, especially when not spawning. Spawning males develop intense red/orange bellies and white leading edges on fins.

Scale Size

Arctic Char have very small, embedded scales that are often difficult to discern, giving them a smooth appearance compared to other salmonids.

Fin Edges

Look for the distinct white leading edges on the pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins, particularly prominent in spawning individuals.

Habitat

Tipo de água
freshwater
Profundidade
Typically found in deep, cold lakes (benthic and pelagic zones) and clear, cold rivers. Anadromous populations migrate to coastal marine waters for feeding, returning to freshwater to spawn.
Ambiente
Oligotrophic (nutrient-poor) lakes, clear rivers, and coastal marine environments. Requires highly oxygenated water. Often found near the bottom in deep lakes, but can be pelagic when feeding on zooplankton.
Distribuição geográfica
Circumpolar distribution in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. Found in northern North America (Canada, Alaska), Greenland, Iceland, northern Europe (Scandinavia, Russia), and isolated alpine lakes in central Europe (e.g., Alps).

Informações sobre aquário

  • Nível de cuidado: expert
  • Temperamento: semi-aggressive
  • Alimentação: carnivore
  • Tamanho mínimo do aquário: 500 gallons (for mature adults)
  • Temperatura: 34-55°F (1-13°C)
  • Nível de pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Dureza da água: 5-15 dGH
  • Compatibilidade: Not suitable for typical home aquariums. In specialized research or public aquaria, they may be kept with other large, cold-water, non-aggressive fish of similar size, provided ample space and appropriate conditions.
  • Requisitos especiais: Requires extremely cold, highly oxygenated, and pristine water conditions. Large, specialized filtration systems, powerful chillers, and significant water volume are essential. Not recommended for private aquarists due to their specific and demanding environmental needs and large adult size.

Informações no ambiente natural

  • Estado de conservação: least concern
  • Sazonalidade: Spawning typically occurs in autumn (September-November), with specific timing varying by latitude and water temperature. Fishing seasons are often regulated to protect spawning stocks, with peak availability outside of spawning periods.
  • Preço de mercado: Varies significantly by region and season, often premium due to limited availability and high quality. Can range from $15-30 USD per pound for fillets.
  • Importância comercial: high
  • Sabor: Mild, delicate, and slightly sweet, often compared to a cross between salmon and trout.
  • Textura: Firm, flaky, and moist with a rich, buttery mouthfeel.
  • Métodos de preparo: Baking, Grilling, Pan-searing, Smoking, Poaching, Roasting
  • Valor nutricional: Excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids, high in protein, and rich in vitamins D and B12.

Fatos principais

Northernmost Fishamazing

The Arctic Char is considered one of the northernmost freshwater fish species, thriving in the extreme cold of Arctic and sub-Arctic regions.

Phenotypic Plasticityevolution

This species exhibits remarkable phenotypic plasticity, meaning individuals can develop different physical forms (morphs) depending on their environment, leading to a wide array of appearances and ecological roles within the same species.

Anadromous and Landlocked Formsbehavior

Arctic Char can be anadromous (migrating to the sea) or entirely landlocked in freshwater lakes. Landlocked populations often become stunted due to limited food resources, while anadromous forms grow larger.

Ancient Lineageevolution

Arctic Char are believed to be one of the oldest and most primitive species within the Salmonidae family, having diverged early from other salmon and trout.

Ecological Indicatorinteresting

Due to their strict requirements for cold, clean, and oxygen-rich water, Arctic Char populations are often considered excellent indicators of environmental health and climate change impacts in their native habitats.

Informações de segurança

Seguro
  • Nível de segurança: safe
  • Venenoso: Não
  • Comestibilidade: edible
  • Observações de manuseio: Arctic Char are not venomous. Handle with wet hands to minimize damage to their protective slime coat if releasing. Their fins can be sharp, so exercise caution to avoid minor cuts. When fishing, ensure compliance with local regulations regarding catch limits and handling practices.

Espécies similares

Brook Trout

Salvelinus fontinalis

Brook Trout typically have vermiculations (worm-like markings) on their back and dorsal fin, and blue halos around red spots, which are absent in Arctic Char. Brook Trout also have a more pronounced square or slightly emarginate caudal fin compared to the Arctic Char's more forked tail.

Lake Trout

Salvelinus namaycush

Lake Trout are generally larger, have a deeply forked caudal fin, and typically possess light spots on a darker background, but these spots are usually white or yellowish and lack the red/pink hues often seen in Arctic Char. Lake Trout also have teeth on the vomer shaft, unlike Arctic Char.

Dolly Varden

Salvelinus malma

Dolly Varden are very similar and often confused with Arctic Char, especially in areas of sympatry. Historically, they were considered the same species. Dolly Varden typically have smaller, more numerous spots and a slightly different head shape. Genetic analysis is often required for definitive differentiation in overlapping ranges.
