Descrição

Pomadasys incisus, commonly known as the Roncador or Bastard Grunt, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Haemulidae, the grunts. It is characterized by its moderately compressed, oblong body and a distinctive coloration. This species is known for the 'grunting' sound it produces by rubbing its pharyngeal teeth together, amplified by the swim bladder, a common trait among Haemulidae.

Dicas de identificação

Body Shape and Coloration

Look for the moderately compressed, oblong body with a silvery-grey to brownish-grey back and lighter belly. Faint longitudinal stripes or rows of spots may be visible.

Lips and Mouth

Observe the thick, fleshy lips. The inside of the mouth is often distinctly orange-yellow, which can be a key identifier.

Chin Pores

Examine the chin for two distinct pores and a median groove, characteristic of the Haemulidae family.

Dorsal Fin

Note the single dorsal fin with a deep notch, typically with 12-13 strong spines and 13-16 soft rays.

Anal Fin Spines

Pay close attention to the anal fin, specifically the second anal spine, which is usually very robust and longer than the third spine.

Habitat

Tipo de água
saltwater
Profundidade
Typically found in shallow coastal waters, from the surf zone down to about 50 meters (164 feet), though occasionally deeper.
Ambiente
Inhabits rocky reefs, sandy bottoms, seagrass beds, and estuaries. Often found near structures such as jetties, breakwaters, and submerged rocks. Juveniles may be found in shallower, more protected areas.
Distribuição geográfica
Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the Strait of Gibraltar south to Angola, including the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and the Mediterranean Sea. It is particularly common along the coasts of West Africa and the Iberian Peninsula.

  • Compatibilidade: Best kept with other large, robust marine fish. Avoid keeping with very small or timid species. Can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks.
  • Requisitos especiais: Requires a large tank with ample swimming space and plenty of rockwork for hiding and establishing territories. Excellent filtration is essential due to their carnivorous diet and potential waste production. May be sensitive to poor water quality.

Fatos principais

Grunting Soundbehavior

The common name 'grunt' comes from the sound these fish make by grinding their pharyngeal teeth together, which is amplified by their swim bladder. This sound is often produced when they are stressed or caught.

Nocturnal Foragersbehavior

Roncadores are primarily nocturnal feeders, emerging from their daytime shelters to forage for benthic invertebrates and small fish under the cover of darkness.

Habitat Generalistsinteresting

This species demonstrates remarkable adaptability, thriving in a variety of coastal habitats including rocky reefs, sandy flats, and even brackish estuaries, showcasing its ecological resilience.

Thick Lipsinteresting

The 'Rubberlip Grunt' alternative name refers to its noticeably thick, fleshy lips, which are thought to aid in foraging for prey on the seabed.

Informações de segurança

Seguro
  • Nível de segurança: safe
  • Venenoso: Não
  • Comestibilidade: edible
  • Observações de manuseio: No specific handling precautions beyond standard fish handling practices to avoid fin pokes. The spines, while not venomous, can be sharp and cause minor punctures. Handle with care to avoid injury to both handler and fish.

Espécies similares

Striped Grunt

Pomadasys stridens

P. stridens typically has more pronounced and numerous longitudinal stripes, often extending onto the head. Its body is generally more elongated, and the second anal spine is usually not as robust or long as in P. incisus.

White Grunt

Haemulon plumierii

While not in the same genus, White Grunts (found in the Western Atlantic) share similar body forms. H. plumierii has distinct blue stripes on its head and body, and its mouth is typically white or pale inside, unlike the orange-yellow of P. incisus.

Smallmouth Grunt

Pomadasys rogeri

P. rogeri generally has a smaller mouth and a more silvery body without the distinct dusky markings often seen in P. incisus. The fin coloration and proportions may also differ subtly.
