Descrição

Pogonias cromis, commonly known as the Black Drum, is the largest species in the Sciaenidae family (drums and croakers). It is a robust, bottom-dwelling fish characterized by its high, arched back and numerous barbels on its chin. Known for its distinctive 'drumming' sound produced by vibrating muscles against its swim bladder, it is a popular target for both commercial and recreational fisheries. This species exhibits a wide range of coloration depending on age and habitat, from silvery-gray to dark bronze or black.

Dicas de identificação

Chin Barbels

The most distinguishing feature is the presence of numerous small, whisker-like barbels on the underside of the chin. No other large drum species in its range has as many or as prominent barbels.

Body Shape and Coloration

Adults have a deep, robust body with a high, arched back and a dark, often uniform, coloration (silvery-gray to black). Juveniles have distinct vertical bars that fade with age.

Size

Can grow to very large sizes, often exceeding 50 pounds (23 kg) and occasionally over 100 pounds (45 kg), making it the largest drum species.

Pharyngeal Teeth

While not externally visible, their large, crushing pharyngeal teeth are unique among drums and adapted for their mollusk-heavy diet.

Habitat

Tipo de água
saltwater
Profundidade
Typically found in shallow coastal waters, estuaries, bays, and lagoons, from just a few feet to depths of about 30 meters (100 feet).
Ambiente
Prefers soft, muddy, or sandy bottoms where it can forage for benthic invertebrates. Often found near oyster beds, jetties, pilings, and other structures. Tolerant of a wide range of salinities, from nearly fresh to full oceanic salinity.
Distribuição geográfica
Western Atlantic Ocean, from Nova Scotia, Canada, south along the U.S. coast, throughout the Gulf of Mexico, and along the coast of Central and South America to Argentina.

Fatos principais

The Drumming Soundbehavior

Male Black Drum produce a distinctive 'drumming' or 'croaking' sound, especially during spawning season, by vibrating specialized muscles against their swim bladder. This sound can be heard both above and below the water.

Shell Crusherinteresting

Black Drum possess powerful, pavement-like pharyngeal teeth in their throats, perfectly adapted for crushing the shells of oysters, clams, mussels, and crabs, which form a significant part of their diet.

Largest of the Drumsrecord

Pogonias cromis is the largest species within the Sciaenidae family, with individuals capable of reaching over 100 pounds (45 kg) and lengths exceeding 1.5 meters (5 feet).

Age and Growthinteresting

Black Drum are long-lived fish, with some individuals documented to live for over 50 years. Their growth rate slows significantly after reaching maturity.

Juvenile Camouflagebehavior

Young Black Drum have striking vertical bars that help them camouflage in shallow, vegetated nursery habitats, providing protection from predators. These bars fade as they mature.

Informações de segurança

Seguro
  • Nível de segurança: safe
  • Venenoso: Não
  • Comestibilidade: edible
  • Observações de manuseio: Black Drum have strong, spiny dorsal and anal fins. Care should be taken when handling to avoid punctures. Their large size can also make them difficult to manage. No venomous spines.

Espécies similares

Red Drum

Sciaenops ocellatus

Red Drum typically have a coppery-red coloration and a distinctive black spot (or multiple spots) at the base of the tail. They lack the numerous chin barbels of the Black Drum. Their body shape is generally more streamlined.

Atlantic Croaker

Micropogonias undulatus

Atlantic Croakers are much smaller, typically silvery with oblique wavy lines on their sides. They have a few small barbels on their chin, but not the extensive array seen on the Black Drum. Their mouth is more terminal.

Spot

Leiostomus xanthurus

Spot are smaller, silvery fish with a prominent black spot behind the gill cover and oblique dark bars on their upper sides. They lack chin barbels entirely.
