Descrição

Paralichthys olivaceus, commonly known as the Olive Flounder or Hirame, is a commercially important species of large-tooth flounder native to the Northwest Pacific. It is a demersal fish characterized by its flattened, asymmetrical body, with both eyes typically located on the left side of its head. This species exhibits remarkable camouflage capabilities, adapting its coloration to blend seamlessly with its benthic environment. It is highly valued in aquaculture and fisheries due to its rapid growth rate and excellent flesh quality.

Características distintivas
Both eyes typically on the left side of the head (sinistral)., Large mouth with sharp, conical teeth., Lateral line is strongly arched above the pectoral fin., Dorsal fin originates anterior to the eyes., Caudal fin is rounded or slightly truncate.
Nadadeira dorsal
Long, extending from the head to the caudal peduncle, with 77-86 soft rays. Originates anterior to the eyes.
Nadadeira caudal
Rounded to slightly truncate, not forked.
Nadadeira peitoral
Well-developed, with the pectoral fin on the eyed side being larger than that on the blind side.
Nadadeiras características
Anal fin is also long, with 59-69 soft rays, mirroring the dorsal fin shape.

Dicas de identificação

Eye Position

Always check the eye position. Paralichthys olivaceus is sinistral, meaning both eyes are on the left side of the head when viewed from the dorsal surface with the mouth pointing forward. This distinguishes it from dextral flounders (eyes on the right).

Mouth Size and Teeth

It possesses a relatively large mouth extending to or beyond the anterior margin of the lower eye, armed with prominent, sharp, conical teeth, indicative of its predatory nature.

Lateral Line

Observe the lateral line, which exhibits a distinct, high arch above the pectoral fin on the eyed side.

Body Shape and Coloration

Its oval to rhomboid body shape and variable olive-brown to grayish-brown coloration with irregular darker spots and blotches on the eyed side are characteristic. The blind side is uniformly white.

Habitat

Tipo de água
saltwater
Profundidade
Typically found in shallow coastal waters, estuaries, and bays, ranging from 10 to 200 meters (33 to 656 feet), but most commonly in depths less than 100 meters.
Ambiente
Demersal, inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms. Prefers areas with soft substrates where it can burrow and ambush prey. Juveniles often found in shallower, estuarine environments.
Distribuição geográfica
Northwest Pacific Ocean, including the coasts of Japan, Korea, China, and the Russian Far East. Its distribution extends from Hokkaido, Japan, south to the East China Sea.

  • Requisitos especiais: Requires a large tank with a soft sand or fine gravel substrate for burrowing. Excellent filtration and strong water movement are essential. Live or fresh dead fish and crustaceans are necessary for feeding. Not commonly kept in home aquaria due to size and specialized needs.

Fatos principais

Master of Camouflageamazing

The Olive Flounder can rapidly change its skin coloration and pattern to perfectly match the surrounding seabed, making it incredibly difficult for both prey and predators to detect.

Left-Eyed Flatfishinteresting

Unlike many other flatfish species, the Olive Flounder is almost exclusively sinistral, meaning both of its eyes migrate to the left side of its head during larval development.

Ambush Predatorbehavior

It is a classic ambush predator, burying itself in the sand or mud with only its eyes protruding, waiting for unsuspecting fish or crustaceans to swim by before launching a swift attack.

Aquaculture Starinteresting

Paralichthys olivaceus is one of the most important aquaculture species in East Asia, particularly in Japan and Korea, due to its high market value and suitability for farming.

Sex Change Potentialevolution

While not a true hermaphrodite, some studies suggest that under certain environmental conditions, there might be a very rare occurrence of sex reversal in this species, though it's not a common phenomenon.

Informações de segurança

Seguro
  • Nível de segurança: safe
  • Venenoso: Não
  • Comestibilidade: edible
  • Observações de manuseio: No specific handling precautions beyond standard fish handling. Its sharp teeth can cause minor cuts if not handled carefully, especially when removing from hooks. No venomous spines.

Espécies similares

Summer Flounder

Paralichthys dentatus

While also sinistral and predatory, P. dentatus (found in the Western Atlantic) generally has a more elongated body, a larger number of dorsal and anal fin rays (D: 81-95, A: 60-73), and often exhibits 5-14 distinct ocellated spots on its eyed side, which are typically absent or less pronounced in P. olivaceus.

California Halibut

Paralichthys californicus

P. californicus (found in the Eastern Pacific) can be either sinistral or dextral (though sinistral is more common). It has a more diamond-shaped body and a more pointed snout. Its lateral line has a less pronounced arch compared to P. olivaceus.

Turbot

Scophthalmus maximus

Turbot is a dextral flounder (eyes on the right) and has a more rounded body shape. Its skin is typically rough with bony tubercles, unlike the smoother, ctenoid scales of P. olivaceus.
