Descrição

Oreochromis mossambicus, commonly known as the Mozambique Tilapia, is a cichlid fish native to Southern Africa. It is a highly adaptable and prolific species, widely introduced globally for aquaculture and as a sport fish, often becoming invasive in non-native environments. It exhibits significant sexual dimorphism, particularly during breeding seasons.

Características físicas

Formato do corpo
compressed
Coloração
Adult males are typically darker, often blackish or dark olive-brown, with a reddish-orange margin on the dorsal and caudal fins, and a distinct black blotch on the operculum. Breeding males develop a bright red or orange throat and lower jaw. Females and non-breeding males are generally duller, silvery-grey to yellowish-brown, with irregular dark blotches or bars on the flanks. Juveniles are silvery with 6-8 vertical bars.
Tipo de escama
ctenoid
Posição da boca

Características distintivas
Large mouth with small, conical teeth arranged in several rows., Single, long dorsal fin with spiny and soft-rayed portions., Prominent black opercular spot (often with a red margin in males)., Caudal fin typically truncate to slightly emarginate, often with a reddish margin in males.
Nadadeira dorsal
Single, long dorsal fin with 15-17 spines and 10-13 soft rays. The spiny portion is longer than the soft-rayed portion.
Nadadeira caudal
Caudal fin truncate to slightly emarginate, often with a reddish margin in breeding males.
Nadadeira peitoral
Paired pectoral fins are relatively large and rounded.
Nadadeiras características
Pelvic fins are thoracic, located directly below the pectoral fins. Anal fin has 3 spines and 9-10 soft rays.

Dicas de identificação

Opercular Spot

Look for a distinct black spot on the operculum (gill cover), often with a reddish margin, especially in males.

Fin Coloration (Males)

Breeding males exhibit bright red or orange margins on the dorsal and caudal fins, and a red throat/lower jaw.

Body Shape and Size

Laterally compressed body, typically reaching 30-40 cm (12-16 inches) in length and up to 1.1 kg (2.4 lbs) in weight, though larger specimens have been recorded.

Lateral Line

The lateral line is interrupted, characteristic of cichlids, with an anterior upper portion and a posterior lower portion.

Habitat

Tipo de água
freshwater
Profundidade
Typically found in shallow waters, from surface to a few meters deep.
Ambiente
Highly adaptable, inhabiting a wide range of freshwater and brackish environments including rivers, lakes, estuaries, lagoons, and even coastal marine waters. Prefers areas with submerged vegetation, muddy or sandy bottoms, and often tolerates poor water quality, low oxygen levels, and high salinity.
Distribuição geográfica
Native to coastal drainages of southeastern Africa, from the lower Zambezi River to the Bushman's River in South Africa. Widely introduced globally, now found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including North, Central, and South America, Asia, and Oceania.

Informações sobre aquário

  • Nível de cuidado: intermediate
  • Temperamento: aggressive
  • Alimentação: omnivore
  • Tamanho mínimo do aquário: 75 gallons (280 liters) for a single adult, larger for groups
  • Temperatura: 20-35°C (68-95°F)
  • Nível de pH: 6.0-8.5
  • Dureza da água: 10-25 dGH
  • Compatibilidade: Best kept in species-specific tanks or with other large, robust, and equally aggressive cichlids. Not suitable for community tanks with smaller or docile fish.
  • Requisitos especiais: Requires ample swimming space, strong filtration due to high bioload, and plenty of hiding spots (rocks, caves) to reduce aggression. Can tolerate a wide range of salinities, from freshwater to brackish conditions.

Informações no ambiente natural

  • Estado de conservação: least concern
  • Sazonalidade: Breeds year-round in tropical climates, with peak activity often coinciding with warmer temperatures and increased rainfall. In temperate regions, breeding is seasonal, typically during warmer months.
  • Preço de mercado: Varies significantly by region and market, generally low to moderate for food fish.
  • Importância comercial: high
  • Sabor: Mild, slightly sweet, often described as 'fishy' if not properly prepared.
  • Textura: Flaky, firm, white flesh.
  • Métodos de preparo: baking, frying, grilling, steaming, broiling
  • Valor nutricional: Good source of lean protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential vitamins and minerals.

Fatos principais

Mouthbrooding Parentbehavior

Female Mozambique Tilapia are maternal mouthbrooders, meaning they incubate and protect their eggs and fry in their mouths, offering a high degree of parental care.

Invasive Speciesinteresting

Due to its hardiness, rapid reproduction, and adaptability, Oreochromis mossambicus is considered one of the world's 100 worst invasive alien species, causing significant ecological damage in many introduced regions.

Salinity Toleranceamazing

This species is euryhaline, capable of tolerating a wide range of salinities, from pure freshwater to full marine conditions, which contributes to its success as an invasive species.

Sex Reversalbehavior

Mozambique Tilapia can undergo sex reversal, particularly when exposed to certain hormones or environmental stressors, a trait exploited in aquaculture for producing all-male populations (which grow faster).

Aquaculture Stapleinteresting

Despite its invasive nature, O. mossambicus was one of the first tilapia species to be widely cultured and remains an important aquaculture species globally, particularly in developing countries.

Informações de segurança

Seguro
  • Nível de segurança: safe
  • Venenoso: Não
  • Comestibilidade: edible
  • Observações de manuseio: While not venomous, the dorsal and anal fins possess sharp spines that can inflict painful punctures. Handle with care, especially when netting or removing from hooks. They can be quite slippery and muscular.

Espécies similares

Nile Tilapia

Oreochromis niloticus

O. niloticus typically has distinct vertical bars on the caudal fin and lacks the prominent red fin margins of breeding O. mossambicus males. The opercular spot in O. niloticus is less pronounced and usually lacks the red margin.

Blue Tilapia

Oreochromis aureus

O. aureus males often develop a bluish-grey coloration and have a more rounded caudal fin. The opercular spot is usually less distinct than in O. mossambicus, and the red fin margins are absent.

Redbelly Tilapia

Coptodon zillii

C. zillii (formerly Tilapia zillii) has a more robust body, often with a reddish belly, and typically exhibits more pronounced vertical barring on the flanks. Its mouth is smaller, and it lacks the distinct opercular spot of O. mossambicus.
