Descrição

Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, commonly known as the Ram Cichlid, is a small, colorful freshwater cichlid native to the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia. It is highly prized in the aquarium trade for its vibrant coloration, peaceful demeanor, and interesting breeding behaviors. Wild specimens typically exhibit a golden-yellow body with iridescent blue spots, a prominent black spot on the flank, and a black stripe through the eye. Selective breeding has led to numerous color morphs, including electric blue, gold, and long-finned varieties.

A distinct black spot on the side of the body and a black vertical stripe through the eye are key identifiers.

Fin Shape (Males vs. Females)

Males typically have longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins, and often more vibrant coloration. Females may show a reddish blush on the belly, especially when gravid.

Size

Adults rarely exceed 7 cm (2.8 inches) in total length, making them one of the smallest cichlids.

  • Tamanho mínimo do aquário: 20 gallons (75 liters) for a pair
  • Temperatura: 25-29°C (77-84°F)
  • Nível de pH: 5.0-7.0
  • Dureza da água: 1-10 dGH
  • Compatibilidade: Generally peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive community fish such as tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and other dwarf cichlids. Avoid fin-nippers or overly boisterous tank mates.
  • Requisitos especiais: Requires a well-established aquarium with soft, acidic water. Provide plenty of hiding places using driftwood, rocks, and dense planting. A sandy substrate is preferred as they enjoy sifting through it. Good water quality and regular water changes are crucial for their health and coloration. They are sensitive to nitrates.

Informações no ambiente natural

  • Estado de conservação: least concern
  • Sazonalidade: Breeding activity in the wild is often linked to the rainy season, when water parameters become softer and more acidic, and food sources are abundant.
  • Preço de mercado: Varies significantly based on color morph and origin (wild-caught vs. captive-bred), typically ranging from $5 to $30 USD per fish.
  • Importância comercial: high
  • Sabor: Not typically consumed due to their small size and value as ornamental fish.

Fatos principais

Monogamous Pairsbehavior

Ram Cichlids form strong, monogamous pair bonds during breeding, with both parents actively participating in egg guarding and fry care.

Substrate Spawnersbehavior

They are open substrate spawners, typically laying their eggs on flat rocks, broad leaves, or in small depressions dug in the substrate.

Sensitive to Water Qualityinteresting

Mikrogeophagus ramirezi is particularly sensitive to poor water quality and high nitrate levels, making pristine water conditions essential for their health and longevity.

Color Morphsinteresting

Extensive selective breeding has resulted in numerous popular color morphs, including 'Electric Blue Ram', 'Gold Ram', 'German Blue Ram', and 'Long-fin Ram', each with unique aesthetic appeal.

Taxonomic Historyevolution

Originally described as Apistogramma ramirezi, it was later reclassified into the genus Microgeophagus, and then Mikrogeophagus, reflecting its distinct evolutionary lineage from other dwarf cichlids.

Espécies similares

Bolivian Ram

Mikrogeophagus altispinosus

M. altispinosus is generally larger (up to 8 cm), has a more elongated body, less vibrant coloration (more subdued yellow/brown with less iridescent blue), and a less pronounced black spot on the flank. Its dorsal fin is also less elongated than that of M. ramirezi.

Apistogramma species

Apistogramma spp.

While also dwarf cichlids, Apistogramma species typically have a more elongated body shape, different fin structures, and distinct color patterns. M. ramirezi's prominent black spot and iridescent blue spangling are usually absent or different in Apistogramma species.
