In its wild form, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi inhabits slow-flowing tributaries, swamps, and floodplains of the Orinoco River basin. These environments are characterized by dense vegetation, leaf litter, submerged roots, and sandy or silty substrates. The water is typically soft, acidic, and often stained with tannins from decaying organic matter. The Gold Ram, being a captive-bred variant, does not exist in the wild.

The wild form, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, is native to the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia. The Gold Ram is a selectively bred aquarium strain and does not have a natural geographic range.
