Loligo vulgaris, commonly known as the European squid, is a commercially important species of squid found in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by its elongated, torpedo-shaped mantle, large eyes, and ten appendages (eight arms and two longer tentacles). This species is a fast-swimming pelagic predator, playing a significant role in marine food webs.
Características físicas
- Formato do corpo
- torpedo
- Coloração
- Highly variable, capable of rapid color changes (chromatophores) for camouflage and communication. Typically translucent to whitish, with reddish-brown to purplish spots and stripes. Can display iridescent hues.
- Tipo de escama
- none
- Posição da boca
- terminal
- Características distintivas
- Elongated, cylindrical mantle tapering to a point posteriorly., Large, prominent eyes., Two long, slender tentacles with suckers only at the club-like ends, used for prey capture., Eight shorter arms lined with suckers., Diamond-shaped fins located at the posterior end of the mantle, extending for about two-thirds of the mantle length., Internal gladius (pen) made of chitin, providing support.
- Nadadeira dorsal
- Not applicable (cephalopod fins are lateral extensions of the mantle)
- Nadadeira caudal
- Not applicable (no caudal fin; propulsion is via jetting and fin undulation)
- Nadadeira peitoral
- Not applicable (fins are lateral mantle extensions)
- Nadadeiras características
- Two large, diamond-shaped fins located on the posterior two-thirds of the mantle, used for stabilization and slow movement. Jet propulsion from the funnel is used for rapid escape.
Dicas de identificação
Mantle Shape
Elongated, cylindrical, and tapering to a distinct point. The fins are diamond-shaped and extend for about two-thirds of the mantle length.
Tentacles and Arms
Two long tentacles with suckers only on the club-like ends, and eight shorter arms with suckers along their entire length. The suckers on the arms have chitinous rings with small teeth.
Coloration
Observe its ability to rapidly change color and pattern. The typical resting coloration is translucent white to reddish-brown with chromatophore patterns.
Gladius (Pen)
If examining a dead specimen, the internal gladius is a clear, feather-shaped chitinous structure running the length of the mantle.
Habitat
- Tipo de água
- saltwater
- Profundidade
- Typically found from the surface down to 250 meters, occasionally deeper (up to 500 meters). Juveniles often inhabit shallower waters.
- Ambiente
- Neritic and oceanic waters over continental shelves and slopes. Prefers sandy or muddy bottoms where it can lay eggs, but also found in open water. Often associated with seagrass beds and rocky areas as juveniles.
- Distribuição geográfica
- Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the North Sea to the Gulf of Guinea, including the Mediterranean Sea. Its range extends from the British Isles southwards along the European and African coasts.
Informações sobre aquário
- Nível de cuidado: expert
- Temperamento: aggressive
- Alimentação: carnivore
- Tamanho mínimo do aquário: 500 gallons (1890 liters) for a single specimen, larger for groups
- Temperatura: 15-20°C (59-68°F)
- Nível de pH: 8.1-8.4
- Dureza da água: 1.024-1.026 specific gravity
- Compatibilidade: Not suitable for community tanks. Best kept in species-specific tanks due to their predatory nature and specialized needs. May exhibit cannibalism if not adequately fed or if tank space is insufficient.
- Requisitos especiais: Requires a very large, well-filtered, and mature aquarium with excellent water quality. Sensitive to nitrates and ammonia. Needs strong water flow and open swimming space. Live food (small fish, shrimp) is essential. Short lifespan in captivity (typically less than a year). Not recommended for hobbyists due to complex care and ethical considerations regarding their short lifespan and high metabolic rate.
Informações no ambiente natural
- Estado de conservação: least concern
- Sazonalidade: Spawning occurs year-round in some areas, but peak fishing seasons vary regionally, often in spring and autumn when they aggregate for reproduction.
- Preço de mercado: Varies significantly by region, season, and processing (fresh, frozen, rings, whole). Generally a high-value seafood product.
- Importância comercial: high
- Sabor: Mild, slightly sweet, and briny.
- Textura: Firm, chewy, yet tender when properly cooked.
- Métodos de preparo: Frying (calamari rings), Grilling, Sautéing, Stewing, Baking, Stuffing
- Valor nutricional: Excellent source of lean protein, low in fat, and rich in vitamins (B12, B6) and minerals (selenium, phosphorus, copper, iron).
Fatos principais
Masters of Camouflageamazing
Loligo vulgaris can change its skin color and texture almost instantaneously using specialized pigment cells called chromatophores, iridophores, and leucophores. This allows them to blend seamlessly with their surroundings or display complex patterns for communication.
Jet Propulsionbehavior
Squids move by expelling water from their mantle cavity through a funnel (siphon). This jet propulsion allows for rapid escape from predators and efficient movement through the water column.
Short but Sweet Lifebehavior
The European squid has a relatively short lifespan, typically living for only 1-2 years. They grow rapidly, reproduce once, and then die (semelparous).
Complex Eyesevolution
Squid eyes are remarkably similar in structure to human eyes, with a cornea, lens, iris, and retina. However, they evolved independently, making them a classic example of convergent evolution.
Ink Defensebehavior
When threatened, Loligo vulgaris can release a cloud of dark ink, primarily composed of melanin, into the water. This ink acts as a visual screen, confusing predators and allowing the squid to escape.
Informações de segurança
Seguro- Nível de segurança: safe
- Venenoso: Não
- Comestibilidade: edible
- Observações de manuseio: Loligo vulgaris is not venomous. When handling live specimens, they may squirt ink as a defense mechanism. Their beaks are sharp and can deliver a bite, but this is rare and generally not dangerous to humans. Handle with care to avoid injury to the animal and to prevent ink discharge.
Espécies similares
Veined Squid
Loligo forbesii
L. forbesii has longer fins, extending for more than two-thirds of the mantle length, and its mantle is generally more robust and less slender than L. vulgaris. The suckers on the arms of L. forbesii have larger, sharper teeth on their chitinous rings.
Little Squid
Alloteuthis media
A. media is a much smaller species, rarely exceeding 12 cm mantle length. It has a very long, slender, and pointed tail-like extension of the mantle beyond the fins, which is absent in L. vulgaris.
European Flying Squid
Todarodes sagittatus
T. sagittatus has a more muscular, robust, and conical mantle. Its fins are shorter, forming a heart-shape at the posterior end, and do not extend as far along the mantle as in L. vulgaris. It also possesses a distinct photophore on its mantle.
