Descrição

Haemulon plumierii, commonly known as the White Grunt or Roncador-branco, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Haemulidae, the grunts. It is a demersal fish found in the western Atlantic Ocean. The common name 'grunt' comes from the sound they produce by grinding their pharyngeal teeth, amplified by the swim bladder, when caught or threatened.

Dicas de identificação

Head Markings

Look for the characteristic blue stripes and spots on the head, especially around the snout and eyes. These are a key distinguishing feature.

Body Stripes

Observe the numerous horizontal yellow-orange stripes running along the silvery-white to yellowish-white body.

Mouth Coloration

When the mouth is open, a reddish interior is often visible, which is typical for many grunt species.

Body Shape

Note the moderately compressed, oval-shaped body, typical of the Haemulidae family.

Habitat

Tipo de água
saltwater
Profundidade
Typically found in shallow coastal waters from 1 to 30 meters (3 to 100 feet), but can occur down to 75 meters (246 feet).
Ambiente
Inhabits a variety of habitats including coral reefs, rocky bottoms, seagrass beds, and mangrove areas. Juveniles are often found in seagrass beds and mangroves for protection. Adults form large schools during the day, often near reefs or wrecks, dispersing at night to feed.
Distribuição geográfica
Western Atlantic Ocean, from Bermuda and Florida (USA) south through the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea to Brazil. Also found in the Bahamas and Antilles.

  • Requisitos especiais: Requires a large tank with plenty of swimming space and rockwork for shelter. Good water quality and strong filtration are essential. They are sensitive to poor water conditions. Provide a sand or fine gravel substrate as they often root around for food.

Fatos principais

Nocturnal Foragersbehavior

White Grunts are primarily nocturnal feeders. During the day, they aggregate in large schools near reefs or other structures, providing safety in numbers. At night, they disperse to forage over sandy bottoms and seagrass beds.

The Grunting Soundinteresting

The common name 'grunt' comes from the distinctive sound these fish make. They produce this sound by grinding their pharyngeal teeth together, and the sound is amplified by their swim bladder, often heard when they are stressed or caught.

Dietary Habitsbehavior

Their diet consists mainly of small benthic invertebrates, including crustaceans (shrimp, crabs), mollusks, and polychaete worms, which they root out of the substrate.

Ecological Roleinteresting

White Grunts play an important ecological role as mesopredators, linking the benthic invertebrate community with larger reef predators. Their schooling behavior also provides a food source for larger piscivorous fish.

Reproductionbehavior

Spawning typically occurs offshore, often in deeper waters, with eggs and larvae being pelagic. Juveniles then migrate to shallow, protected nursery habitats like seagrass beds and mangroves.

Informações de segurança

Seguro
  • Nível de segurança: safe
  • Venenoso: Não
  • Comestibilidade: edible
  • Observações de manuseio: No specific handling precautions beyond standard fish handling. They may 'grunt' when caught, which is harmless. Their dorsal and anal fin spines can be sharp, so handle with care to avoid punctures.

Espécies similares

French Grunt

Haemulon flavolineatum

French Grunts have more prominent yellow stripes that are often angled upwards posteriorly, and their body is generally more yellowish. The head markings are less distinct blue lines compared to the more pronounced blue stripes and spots of the White Grunt.

Tomtate Grunt

Haemulon aurolineatum

Tomtate Grunts are generally smaller and have a more slender body. They typically have a prominent dark stripe along the lateral line and a less intricate pattern of stripes on the head and body compared to the White Grunt.

Bluestriped Grunt

Haemulon sciurus

Bluestriped Grunts have distinct blue stripes on a yellow body, and their caudal fin is often dusky or blackish. The stripes on the body are typically more continuous and less broken than the White Grunt's.
