Descrição

Esox lucius, commonly known as the Northern Pike, is a predatory freshwater fish native to North America, Europe, and northern Asia. It is characterized by its elongated, torpedo-shaped body, duck-bill-like snout, and sharp, backward-pointing teeth. Pikes are ambush predators, lying in wait among aquatic vegetation to strike at unsuspecting prey. They are highly valued as sport fish and are an important component of many freshwater ecosystems.

Características distintivas
Elongated, cylindrical body, Large, duck-bill-like snout, Numerous sharp, backward-pointing teeth on jaws, palate, and tongue, Single dorsal fin positioned far back on the body, directly above the anal fin, Lateral line usually complete, with 105-148 scales
Nadadeira dorsal
Single, soft-rayed, located posteriorly, directly above the anal fin. Typically 17-25 rays.
Nadadeira caudal
Forked, with rounded lobes.

Dicas de identificação

Snout Shape

The Northern Pike has a distinctive flattened, duck-bill-like snout, which is longer and more pointed than that of muskellunge.

Cheek and Operculum Scaling

The entire cheek is scaled, but only the upper half of the operculum (gill cover) is scaled. This is a key differentiator from muskellunge (Esox masquinongy), which has scaling only on the upper half of both the cheek and operculum, and grass pickerel (Esox americanus vermiculatus) which has both fully scaled.

Body Markings

Northern Pike typically have light, bean-shaped spots on a darker body background. Muskellunge usually have dark spots or bars on a lighter background, or are unpatterned.

Pore Count on Underside of Jaw

Northern Pike typically have 5 pores on each side of the underside of the lower jaw (mandibular pores), whereas muskellunge usually have 6-9 pores.

Habitat

Tipo de água
freshwater
Profundidade
Typically found in shallow, vegetated areas (0.5-5 meters), but larger individuals may inhabit deeper waters (up to 10-15 meters) in larger lakes.
Ambiente
Prefers clear, cool to moderately warm, slow-moving or still waters of lakes, reservoirs, and large rivers. Abundant aquatic vegetation (e.g., lily pads, submerged grasses) is crucial for ambush predation and cover. Tolerant of a wide range of water conditions but avoids strong currents.
Distribuição geográfica
Holarctic distribution, encompassing northern North America (Alaska, Canada, northern USA), Europe (from Ireland to Russia), and northern Asia (Siberia).

Informações sobre aquário

  • Nível de cuidado: expert
  • Temperamento: aggressive
  • Alimentação: carnivore
  • Tamanho mínimo do aquário: Not suitable for typical home aquariums due to large size and predatory nature; requires very large, specialized facilities.
  • Temperatura: 10-22°C (50-72°F)
  • Nível de pH: 6.5-8.0
  • Dureza da água: 5-20 dGH
  • Compatibilidade: Not compatible with other fish, as they are highly predatory and will consume anything that fits in their mouth. Best kept alone in specialized exhibits.
  • Requisitos especiais: Requires extremely large tanks or ponds with ample hiding places (e.g., artificial vegetation, submerged logs). Excellent filtration is essential due to their large size and carnivorous diet. Live or fresh dead fish are typically required for feeding.

Informações no ambiente natural

  • Estado de conservação: least concern
  • Sazonalidade: Spawns in early spring (March-May) shortly after ice-out. Feeding activity is generally high in spring and autumn, and can be reduced in mid-summer and mid-winter.
  • Preço de mercado: Varies by region and size, generally moderate for food fish, higher for trophy sport fish.
  • Importância comercial: medium
  • Sabor: Mild, somewhat flaky white flesh, can be bony.
  • Textura: Firm, lean.
  • Métodos de preparo: Baking, Frying, Grilling, Poaching, Smoking
  • Valor nutricional: Good source of protein, low in fat. Contains Omega-3 fatty acids.

Fatos principais

Ambush Predatorbehavior

Northern Pike are classic ambush predators, often remaining motionless in dense vegetation for extended periods before launching a rapid, explosive strike at unsuspecting prey.

Cannibalismbehavior

Cannibalism is common among Northern Pike, especially when food resources are scarce or population densities are high. Larger pike will readily consume smaller pike.

Longevityrecord

Northern Pike can live for a considerable time, with individuals in the wild often reaching 10-15 years, and some recorded up to 30 years in optimal conditions.

Ecological Rolebehavior

As apex predators in many freshwater systems, Northern Pike play a crucial role in regulating populations of smaller fish and maintaining ecosystem balance.

Spawning Migrationbehavior

During early spring, Northern Pike undertake migrations from larger bodies of water into shallow, vegetated floodplains, marshes, or slow-moving tributaries to spawn.

Informações de segurança

Manusear com cuidado
  • Nível de segurança: caution
  • Venenoso: Não
  • Comestibilidade: edible
  • Observações de manuseio: Northern Pike possess numerous sharp, backward-pointing teeth on their jaws, palate, and tongue. Extreme caution is advised when handling to avoid severe lacerations. Use a fish gripper or specialized gloves, and consider using long-nosed pliers or a jaw spreader for hook removal. Never put fingers into a pike's mouth. Their gill rakers are also sharp and can cause injury.

Espécies similares

Muskellunge

Esox masquinongy

Muskellunge typically have dark markings (spots or bars) on a lighter body, while pike have light spots on a darker body. Muskellunge have scaling only on the upper half of both the cheek and operculum, whereas pike have the entire cheek scaled but only the upper half of the operculum scaled. Muskellunge usually have 6-9 mandibular pores, while pike have 5.

Chain Pickerel

Esox niger

Chain pickerel are generally smaller than Northern Pike and have a distinctive chain-like pattern on their sides. Both the cheek and operculum are fully scaled in chain pickerel, unlike Northern Pike.

Amur Pike

Esox reichertii

The Amur Pike is found only in the Amur River basin and has distinct dark spots or blotches on a lighter background, resembling a muskellunge more than a Northern Pike. Its scales are also smaller than those of E. lucius.
