Epinephelus malabaricus, commonly known as the Malabar Grouper or Garoupa-leopardo, is a large, robust species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Serranidae, which includes the groupers and sea basses. It is a commercially important species, highly valued for its flesh. This species is characterized by its mottled coloration, which provides excellent camouflage in its preferred reef and rocky habitats. It is a predatory fish, ambushing smaller fish and crustaceans.

Dicas de identificação
Coloration and Pattern
Look for the distinctive mottled pattern of irregular dark brown to black spots and blotches on a lighter background. The spots are highly variable in size and shape.
Caudal Fin Shape
Adults typically have a rounded caudal fin, which can help distinguish it from some other grouper species with truncate or emarginate tails.
Mouth and Jaw
Observe the large mouth and the presence of multiple rows of teeth on the mid-side of the lower jaw (3-5 rows), a key diagnostic feature.
Body Shape
Its robust, elongated body is characteristic of many grouper species, but combined with the unique spotting, it aids in identification.
Habitat
- Tipo de água
- saltwater
- Profundidade
- Typically found in depths ranging from 1 to 150 meters (3 to 492 feet), but most commonly between 10 and 50 meters.
- Ambiente
- Inhabits a variety of coastal and offshore habitats including coral reefs, rocky bottoms, estuaries, mangrove areas, and muddy or sandy substrates. Juveniles are often found in shallower, more protected areas like mangroves and seagrass beds.
- Distribuição geográfica
- Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa eastward to the western Pacific, including Australia, Japan, and the South China Sea. Its range extends north to southern Japan and south to Australia.

- Compatibilidade: Not suitable for community tanks with smaller fish. Can be kept with other large, aggressive fish of similar size, but careful monitoring is required.
- Requisitos especiais: Requires a very large aquarium with ample hiding places and strong filtration. Excellent water quality is paramount. Due to its large adult size, it is generally not recommended for home aquaria unless a dedicated, very large system is available.

Fatos principais
Protogynous Hermaphroditebehavior
Like many groupers, Epinephelus malabaricus is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals mature first as females and later can change sex to become males.
Ambush Predatorbehavior
This species is a classic ambush predator, relying on its excellent camouflage to hide among rocks and corals, waiting for unsuspecting prey to pass by.
Long Lifespanrecord
Malabar Groupers can live for a considerable number of years, with some individuals recorded to live over 20 years in the wild.
Habitat Generalistinteresting
Unlike some more specialized reef fish, E. malabaricus is a habitat generalist, thriving in a wide range of environments from clear coral reefs to turbid estuarine waters.
Informações de segurança
Manusear com cuidado- Nível de segurança: caution
- Venenoso: Não
- Comestibilidade: edible
- Observações de manuseio: While not venomous, Garoupa-leopardo has a large mouth and sharp teeth. Care should be taken when handling to avoid bites. Large specimens can inflict serious injury. Anglers should use appropriate tools for hook removal. Spines on the dorsal and anal fins are sharp and can cause painful punctures.
Espécies similares
Brown-marbled Grouper
Epinephelus fuscoguttatus
E. fuscoguttatus typically has a more uniform brown or reddish-brown background color with darker, more regularly spaced spots, and often a saddle-like blotch on the caudal peduncle. Its caudal fin is usually truncate or slightly emarginate, not rounded like E. malabaricus.
Giant Grouper
Epinephelus lanceolatus
The Giant Grouper is much larger, reaching over 2 meters in length. While it also has dark spots, its body is generally more uniformly dark brown or grey, and the spots are less distinct and more widely spaced than in E. malabaricus. Juveniles of E. lanceolatus have distinct irregular dark bands and blotches.
Flowery Cod
Epinephelus fuscoguttatus
Often confused with E. malabaricus due to similar habitat and general appearance. However, E. fuscoguttatus typically has a more pronounced 'flowery' pattern with smaller, more numerous spots and often a distinct dark saddle on the caudal peduncle. The caudal fin is usually truncate.
